Flarum official demo sites - usage update

Hello Flarum community 👋

As you are most likely aware, we run some demo sites with automated access for anyone to try out Flarum first hand. Unfortunately, in recent days and weeks, these sites have been defaced, abused and generally mistreated by one or two individuals.

With immediate effect, these sites no longer allow the creation of new admin users, and the old admin/password combo updated. The admin password now rotates daily alongside the instance reset. Creation of regular and moderator accounts remains available and fully automated.

We very much still want you to make use of these demo sites, but we do have to protect our infrastructure and users. To this end, anyone wishing to get admin access should reach out to either @GreXXL or @IanM - we both have the daily passwords and will happily share with you on request.

In the future, we plan to automate admin access to these sites, right from your user profile here on discuss, but focus right now must remain on the final stages of 2.x - distractions like having to sort out blatent vandalism on our demo sites is not something we should have to deal with!

The sites we run for public demo use are:

Demo - plain Flarum 2.0, 1st party only extensions. Follows the latest tagged releases
Nightly - Flarum 2.x-dev, 1st party extensions, plus a selection from FoF. Pulls from the latest commits on 2.x branch
Nightly Postgres - same as nightly, but powered by Postgres DB

It's really sad this had to happen. The fact you could simply create an admin user using an email prefix was by far one of the simplest ways I've seen a demo behave. It's very disappointing that a great thing is no longer available due to the childish behavior of a few.

luceos yes it's a great shame. Openess is at the heart of Flarum, and this, unfortunately, builds a barrier.

It was disappointing because I was looking to try it out and see the admin panel functions only to find it was vandalized. It's a shame people have to ruin good things

It's all but forgotten here, but FreeFlarum really is second to none in terms of lowering the barrier to Flarum adoption.

Creating administrators has always been a vulnerability to some extent, those who really want to try out flarum, especially the 2.0 version, will find a way to run locally or the same freeflarum, the same xampp on Windows or a web panel for linux

One of the only ways to do it, is create an admin account but also lock it down. Basically make it a "view only" account. Which would likely take some custom code since you are going to have to give someone admin rights but limit to only view. Which is honestly all I needed. I was mostly curious as to how everything looked on the back end.

IanM Maybe worth considering a WordPress Playground-like approach: https://playground.wordpress.net/ WordPress/wordpress-playground

It runs PHP directly in the browser via WebAssembly, so the site and server run locally in the user's browser instead of on shared infrastructure. Each user gets their own isolated instance to experiment with.
