[2.0 RC2] Native "new posts" banner not working - polling removed or bug?

Hi everyone,

I'm testing Flarum 2.0 RC2 and noticed that the native "new posts" banner that used to appear in the DiscussionList when new content is posted no longer works. In Flarum 1.8, this worked perfectly out of the box.

Before reporting this as a bug on GitHub, I wanted to ask the community: was native polling intentionally removed in 2.0 in favor of WebSockets, or is this a regression bug?

What I've tested

I've done extensive troubleshooting to isolate the issue:

Disabled all third-party extensions - Only official flarum/* extensions remain active
Removed all custom header/footer scripts - Including a LiveChat widget that was injecting external JavaScript
Cleared all caches - Flarum cache (php flarum cache:clear), browser cache, hard reload
Checked browser DevTools:
- Console: No JavaScript errors
- Network tab: No periodic API calls to /api/discussions or /api/notifications are being made

Expected behavior (Flarum 1.8)

The DiscussionList component would periodically poll the API
When new posts were created, a "new posts" banner would appear at the top of the list
This worked out of the box without any WebSocket configuration

Actual behavior (Flarum 2.0 RC2)

No periodic polling requests are visible in the Network tab
No banner appears when new posts are created
The only way to see new content is to manually reload the page (F5)

My questions

Was native polling intentionally removed in Flarum 2.0? If so, is the new recommended approach to use WebSockets (Laravel Reverb/Soketi/Pusher) for real-time updates?

This seems complex to configure and maybe not possibile in shared hosting, any alternative?

If polling was removed, is there documentation or a guide on how to set up real-time notifications in 2.0?

I tried to install the extension "polling" but was not helpful.

Flarum version: 2.0 RC2
PHP version: 8.5
Browser: Brave

Flarum never did polling out of the box. Must be an extension you use.

Oh I will see.
Flarum 2.0 never support a lot of extension so... maybe I have to forget simply this nice function that I had with Flarum 1.8 :-) or maybe i will find a solution in the future.

peopleinside The banner you mentioned is handled by Pusher or Realtime

I know but in Flarum 1.8 if I do the command composer show flarum/pusher I get Package "flarum/pusher" not found, try using --available (-a) to show all available packages. so I cannot explain why in my Flarum 1.8 I have the banner that alert me on new post added. This is good... and I wanna have the same in Flarum 2.0 but I was not able to have.

I tried to install the Pusher but was not working 😊

Share you php flarum info and we might be able to tell. I know there have been extensions for 1.x that did polling.

Oh pusher here is visible not in flarum. This extension is not visible in flarum admin.
On Flarum 2.0 I tried to configure Pusher with app id app key but did not work.

peopleinside You should be able to run composer require flarum/pusher:^2.0.0-rc.2 to install Pusher in Flarum 2.x

The extension activate, i configure and nothing change: no notification on new post.

I was not able to see that on my Flarum 2.0 upgrade.

peopleinside I don't use Pusher, but instead realtime. Is there a setting for the extension to allow / disallow it? Do you have any custom CSS that would display: none !important; ?

I am not suggesting the realtime extension to you, I am asking if you have everything enabled in the settings as I only use realtime but don't use Pusher. Wondering if there are similar settings.

Back when I first started on Flarum, I used Pusher. I have not had any issues with 1.8.x and Pusher integration. This makes me believe that there is something going on with your specific setup.

You have to just imagine this:
From my productive community means the public one that I use i created a copy and migrated in a different domain then upgraded from 1.8 to 2.0.

Was a big work, remove all extension then once on 2.0 add again extension or was not able to upgrade due to continue errors of incompatible extensios.

Once Flarum 2.0 has extension installed (different extension still be not available and someone maybe will never be) I simply noted that I dont have anymore any alert when on all discussion list a new discussion is added.

I dont know if also notification has the same issue but I noted that.
I tried to install Pusher extension and to put api key and app key required but nothing.

Currently I deleted all Flarum 2.0 demo and I'm back to the 1.8 scared about when will be the time to use Flarum 2.0

peopleinside two things: Flarum 2.0 is still in development, but from the communities I host, I have no issues. Second, there is nothing to be scared about, you'll only learn from this.

I want you to try this, first ensure Pusher is enabled. Go to your Flarum Index, on your keyboard hit F12 and go to your Console. Do you see anything in Red?

As far as I remember, I had issues with the latest version of Pusher as well. However, around that time, Realtime released a free version for Flarum 2.x, so I switched to it right away. I can recommend trying the previous version of Pusher — everything might work fine there
