First, the bug @SpikeNit caught: fixed. Flarum 2.0.0-rc.6 changed how the typing indicator learns who is typing, in a way only its own bundled websocket server supports, so through Warble everyone showed as [Hidden] no matter what your settings said. As of v1.0.3 names work again, and someone who hides their online status stays anonymous, like before. Thanks for the clear report.
Now the bigger one. Warble v1.1.0 is out, and Warble no longer needs me.
Until now Warble was a hosted service: I ran the websocket servers, you pasted a key. That's over. With no websocket configured, the extension now runs realtime over polling: your visitors' browsers quietly ask your forum for updates every few seconds. Live posts, typing indicators, notifications, all of it, on any hosting, including the shared hosting that can't run a socket server. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to run, nothing to pay. The trade is honesty about speed: polling is a few seconds behind rather than instant. Small and mid-size forums won't care. A busy forum should run its own websocket.
One thing that catches everyone: the typing indicator sits behind realtime's "See who is typing" permission, and a fresh install grants it to nobody. Grant it on the Permissions page to whoever should see names, guests included if you want.
Updating:
composer update linkrobins/flarum-warble
php flarum migrate
php flarum cache:clear
If you're connected to the hosted service, nothing breaks, your connection keeps working as-is. But you don't need it anymore: clear your Warble key in admin and the extension strips the connection and drops to polling on its own. There's no reason left to pay for it.
Same reason as the Birdseye post: I'm closing the door on Flarum, and I'm not leaving anyone's realtime hanging on servers I'll eventually turn off. The extension is MIT, the code is on GitHub, and it works without me. That was the goal.
