This extension is released, please visit #39857 Hi everyone! Inspired by #36639 and #38034, I am developing the threadmark extension for discussion pages to mark key content posts. The minimum viable product has been completed locally. I’m sharing it here to collect feedback. Feel free to leave any suggestions or ideas for improvement! (Screenshot below.) Current MVP Features Frontend & Forum Features Discussion authors can add, edit, and delete public threadmarks for their own discussions. Administrators also have permission to manage these public threadmarks. All logged-in users can create personal threadmarks for any discussion. These personal marks are private and only visible to the creator — other users and even administrators cannot view them. All threadmarks are displayed as colored dots on the timeline. Clicking a dot will automatically scroll to the corresponding post with a prominent animation prompt. Users can pin a threadmark sidebar panel to view all marks in the current discussion. The panel supports filtering (author/public/personal marks), sorting, editing and deleting threadmarks, as well as modifying mark notes. Threadmark labels are displayed above post avatars. Custom notes added to threadmarks will be shown alongside the mark for clearer context. A filter button has also been added to the sidebar. You can choose to view only the key content. Delete a post won't delete the threadmarks added before. A placeholder will be shown. Admin Panel Features The extension settings page allows administrators to configure preset threadmark options for quick and convenient marking across the forum. Preset threadmarks support full customization of name, display color, and icon. A in-use threadmark type cannot be deleted, you can only disable it. I’m really pleased that a developer has taken up my suggestion! 🙂

What you’ve done so far is already brilliant!

Just one thing :

thatsgolden Discussion authors can add, edit, and delete public threadmarks for their own discussions. Administrators also have permission to manage these public threadmarks.

I’d like authors, administrators, as well as moderators and other groups to be able to add public threadmarks. This could be configured via permissions set by the administrator.

Thank you very much in advance ! 🙂

Wlork That makes sense. Now it can manage roles in this way

Update:

Nearby marks get merged into a single point.

Do we have a better way to render these points? Having multiple‑colored dots all along the timeline might not look great.

or a tiny dot

Thank you very much 🙂 !

Good idea !

For render, I prefer options 1 and 3 :

Alternatively, you could create an option in the admin settings so that everyone can choose their preferred render 🙂

thatsgolden or a tiny dot

Too small 😉

I was just thinking… it's not possible for members/groups to customise the title of threadmarks ?

For example, when you click on a point with several threadmarks, it would be nice if a list of titles appeared for greater clarity. That way, when you click on a title, it automatically scroll to the corresponding post as intended

If it just shows the type of bookmark, that would be a bit confusing.

Maybe this is already in place, but I didn’t spot it in the screenshots ? Just in case, I’ve taken the liberty of making this suggestion 🙂

thatsgolden

Yes. Users with management permissions can change the threadmark type and also add a title‑like text field — though perhaps we should call it a note instead.
We can open this edit modal either via the menu in the bottom‑right of the post, or directly from the edit button each line in the threadmark list panel.

Wlork

thatsgolden Glad you thought of the titles ! They can be very useful 🙂

Hello @thatsgolden

Just to be sure: are you planning to release an extension ?

If yes, then I’d be delighted to test it 🙂

ernestdefoe

Yeah this looks pretty amazing.

thatsgolden

Wlork Yes I plan to release it within the next two days. I had a fever the past two days, so there wasn't much progress. I'm feeling better today, and going to work on it. 😀

Great ! I’m sorry to hear that. I’m glad you’re feeling better – take your time 🙂

Take plenty of rest my friend! You're doing great work 🙂

thatsgolden

Karl Thanks, my friend! I really appreciate it.

I think tomorrow will be the release day. 🙂

@thatsgolden

I have a suggestion, from my members.

I’m not sure if it’s possible, but it would be nice if, every time a threadmark is created, there was a small flashing indicator in the discussion list to let members know there’s a new. This indicator would remain visible until the message has been read

🙂
