Unable to quote cross-topics

The Flarum replies syntax is limited to the context of its topic. This means there's no way to paste in properly linked quotes from other posts, which is admittedly a rare but imo very valuable enhancement to a discussion. It encourages creating new topics in favour of de-railing existing ones.

Might you consider extending your syntax with a topic-identifier? Some ideas:

> @Toby#1:190

The other option of course is to make the number in the post mentions refer to the post's unique ID, rather than its number within the discussion. So like @Toby#1738 for example.

It's not entirely impossible to paste in linked quotes, especially now that BBcode is supported. It just takes a bit of extra manual labor. As for cross-linking, Toby's addressed the subject in that post I linked in your sandbox thread:

Didn't know there was a concept of unique IDs in Flarum! In that case I guess that's probably the best way to do it.

I rather like the second one, because it keeps the discussion ID and post ID in the same order as the URL format. It seems to me there's an off chance that fact could be convenient down the road (for example, to someone trying to write an extension to convert between the two. But I could be wrong about that.

Are you thinking of making the thread ID optional in the quote string? Or will it be present in every quote?

That would be a good idea to prevent breakage of quotes once moving posts between discussions is implemented.

Will there be a way to view posts using the unique post ID in a URL? Or will Flarum automatically translate them to the usual discussionID/xxx/replyID format when a cross-discussion quote is clicked?

It translates them to the discussionID/xxx/replyNumber format.

Hello Flarum community,
I'm sorry if it is a very dumb question, but is there an easy way to cross-mention a post when writing a post directly from the editor? The post suggestion list which pops up in the editor is only composed of posts in the current thread.

For the moment, if I want to cross-mention a post, I have to go to the post in question, select "reply", copy the "@user#number", go back to the thread in which I was writing, and paste the reference.

facteurpat unfortunately I don't think there's an easier way.

We could make it so when you click "reply" or "quote", it offers you the possibility to insert in the existing message being composed, or create a new reply in the current discussion.

Actually I think it would make sense for the "Quote" feature to always insert in the currently composed message without asking first.

I guess it was made this way so you don't mistakenly publish in the wrong discussion after navigating around if you forget you have the composer open.
