I would like to add to this conversation by stating that as an owner/ admin on my forum, I would want the ability to see ALL private conversations, even if I am not part of them.
There are liability, housekeeping, information ramifications to justify this.

Just a reminder: if you really need to access the private messages you just need to access the database. Or do you need to access the private messages of your users 24 hours a day ? ?

Also, if a member of the conversation flags a message you will be able to see it in Flarum.

ok so now this has bulged out of its sensible site operator boundaries to become an ethics issue.

You invite people to your home and they are free to come and go as they please.
You are ok with them going to a room, closing the door and conducting a transaction or planning anything illegal (in YOUR house) because you politely want to respect their choice to have a private conversation?

and kudos Luceos! This is the meaning:

Byōbu (屏風, wind wall) are Japanese folding screens made from several joined panels, 
bearing decorative painting and calligraphy, used to separate interiors and enclose 
private spaces, among other uses.

Anyway, I think you are either not a site owner or you are ok with your users doing whatever they please on your watch.

I wasn't aware and I don't know how to Clark (I do have access to the database).

My purpose is to have to tool to access PM. I won't sit there and read everyone's conversations.
However, if a member is reported/ noticed for being a bad element in the group, I want to be able to inverstigate the accusations by looking at their whole presence and behavior on my site, including via PM.

That's exactly what happens if someone flags a post inside a private extension. Admins and mods can see it until they remove the flag ?

If you need to investigate a discussion that is not flagged you can access the database with a tool like phpMyAdmin and have a look at the discussions and posts table. But be careful if you're not sure how it works, you could break things.

Yes, my concern is for situations when no one has flagged anything and I need to look at a member closely.

luceos You could create a tag hidden to the public which has the required permissions for members to create a private discussion with just you.

This is interesting.

Could I create a tag for "Private Discussions" that would allow them to be viewed all on one page and also allow me to control permissions for them via that tag? For example, allow users to delete these but not other topics.

Or can we add a column to the permissions tree that handles the Private tag?

personally, I think direct messages ("PM" in old forums) have to be in other site and separated. Even in similar platforms (discourse and nodebb) this is apart from threadss

Blueh This is Flagrows implementation of private messages, direct messages, personal messages, private discussions, whatever you want to call it. Feel free to add your input to this discussion for an alternate implementation.

Just two think (for now) !!
if a user try to access a private discussion that he doesn't own or participate in, he fall on an error "Whoops, PrettyPageHandler" !! perhaps in that case the user should find a 404 instead !!

And I don't know if you are aware of it, but the first level reply doesn't show up in the discussion list.. I mean the small sentence saying "theDude reply few second..etc", it stay on the "theDude2 started...etc" !! It start to change and show "reply" for the second reply... (get it? sorry for my english)

There are some stuff we can add to that extension... Like as you do for the Profile page, why not a messenger page with all the private discussion (with a link under "view profile") !!??? And also put another link to that new page in the "SessionDropdown Menu" ??
Or just a link to "/?q=is%3Aprivate" ?? (I guess, I can with the "link" extension but, that's not a nice place for a "private link"...)
