A better answer would be we do not know. Although "whenever it's ready" might be true, the same applies to everything in life.

On the other hand, even though I know @ameo was trying to add some pizzazz with his animated GIF, the best way to have asked would have been:

"Markdown is great, very powerful, yet many people have a hard time typing it, and using it overall. Are there any plans to provide a visual editor to cover for user's shortcomings? Flarum will greatly benefit from it! If there are plans, is there a timeline somewhere for its advent? Thanks!"

I know that there are plans. At least there were.
But seeing smileys and silly likes integrated, and this not yet makes me wonder.
And impatient. So, more direct. I just find it strange it's not here yet and wonder can we expect it in beta at last.

Markdown parser is already completed serverside right? Adding a visual editor shouldn't be that hard. I think using FontAwesome Icons mixed with some js an make a nice one.

ameo From the demo that @Berlyn made it comes with both BBCode & CommonMark, as well as the default extensions (But this is just a guess of what's coming with the beta.)

and how much questions will you get on how to use it from forum members.

Visual Editor's are a must on a forum. There is no question.

A visual editor that puts in markdown the correct way (with the preview showing the actual result) would help educate users on doing it "correctly" as well.

ameo, I don't even think, that text styling is must have in communications. And I completely forgot, that markdown is implemented in flarum, so, when I've got italics in my message, i was surprised. 😉

How much styling do the forum need really? Bold, italics. What else? Okay. Headlines. Okaaay, color highlight. Quotes. That's all. I don't think, that it is hard to remember 5 highly intuitive style codes. And we don't use all of them simultaneously in every message. I don't think, that it will be the big problem.

Only some button that are inserting the syntax for some things, and the all can be disable in the menu... why not ? (as a addon :p )

My vote is for minimal options in a WYSIWIG, configurable in the admin.

Bold, Italics, Underlined, Link, Image (just URL), Quote, Code.

Think that's it. Code is pretty useful for coding forums (would be useful here for example) but doesn't need to be enabled by default.

I've not really seen anyone use the text colour options in forums I've run unless they're being silly, so no real need for those. Plus they make posts look ghastly and we can't be having with that on such a lovely piece of software 🙂

If the editor button output parsed as markdown behind the scenes then all the better as you can switch between having the editor buttons on or off either forum-wide or per-user if you wanted, and we're all about the plugins here at Flarum Towers so you don't want removal of the button-laden editor plugin to break everything 😉
