Terms & Privacy Policies for Website

I was wondering how many people when they start up their website have a Terms, Privacy policies in place? Do you wait until there is a lot of traffic coming to the website or do you have that in place before starting up? I have done some research and it shows to have a lawyer who specializes in this type of thing to create that for you. The research also recommended that you don't copy other websites terms and policies due to copyright infringements. It also showed that the builders for this type of thing are to generic and may not cover what you need.

I am curious as to thoughts regarding this and what other people with websites have done.

This post is my own opinion, but I'd always have the legalese in place before launching the website. It also depends on what type of site your launching, some software already have this built-in for you so it may just be a case of modifying it to suit your needs. But in most scenarios, it is probably a good idea to call in the help of someone who's experienced in this field to help you out with this. Do you really want to risk it without having it checked by a professional?

There's also a crap ton of TOS templates online, even a free lawyer on that website you can get free legal advice from can help you with creating your TOS but I forgot the name of it. It was very useful when I wanted to create a contract when I was freelancing as a Server Administrator and Migration Expert. It basically protected my ass because I was dealing with an Eye Clinic and the person who got me the gig was a close friend and she put in a good word for me. I just wished I didn't move cause I learned a lot where I am now and could of built a bad ass eye clinic software suite.

Just be careful and read through any TOS you want to copy, they are pretty generic and only specific to how you operate your site.

You can freely edit the whole thing (based on what kind of website you are running) and use it on your own website. But of course, i do recommend you ask for a proffesional (lawyer) for this kind of job to make sure you are doing it right.

I entered in the required information and it looks and sounds good. I am sure it would be sufficient to start out at least. Then at some point have a lawyer look at it. I still have in the back of my mind it still may be best to have that all ironed out before the site is up and running. Just spendy is all.

Thank you for all of your replies. I really appreciate it. I am planning on creating a nursing website where nurses, cna's can come together and share ideas, thoughts and whatever. I am thinking for a website like that it would be best to have a terms of service, privacy policy and a HIPPA policy in place as well before starting it up. Just to cover my ass. I would use Flarum of course and it would be mainly focused on the forums so people stay active and such.
