SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation

I'm getting this error when submitting the first page of the install.

SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1115 Unknown character set: 'utf8mb4'

Not sure what to do. All of the characters are basic characters without accents or anything funky. Here's a screenshot of the error: http://clck.io/flarum

What MySQL version are you on? The utf8mb4 charset isn't added until MySQL 5.5, so you'll run into trouble with that.

Thank you. That's the problem. My host is running 5.1. I'll request that they upgrade it.

zabca haha, that's true. Luckily I have a managed server and they're upgrading it to 5.6 right now 🙂

What a disappointment, I can't install Flarum because my webhost (1and1) is still on MySQL 5.1 🙁

Kobaia Hey Kobaia, not sure if you've seen since you posted this, but 1and1 now has MySQL 5.5 available... I'm working on getting it working right now.

I've got a VPS with root access. It's unmanaged so if I want something, I'd better figure it out myself lol.
On the plus side I get to upgrade asap 🙂

gyedwab Thank you! I didn't knew it was available. I've just checked my 1&1 account and it still says MySQL 5.1 that's weird. Maybe it's because I'm on their cheapest shared hosting ? It's the Starter Pack. Do I need to do something to activate MySQL 5.5 ?
