Uploading Image 500 Internal Error

nginx/1.2.1, php 5.5.28, running with php5-fpm on a Debian 7 server.
When I submit a image to upload for my avatar firebug gives this error:
"NetworkError: 500 Internal Server Error - http://www.singularidea.org/api/users/1/avatar"

There's no error in nginx/error.log
It also gives the generic error as well
The image is 90kb so it shouldn't be tripping any size limits.

Make sure the assets/avatars directory is writable by PHP?

txtd I've got everything pooled (I'm hosting various other websites). By separating each one, it's supposed to keep the process size of each php-fpm down since it needs to cache less. In this case, the sock is owned by the same user owning the flarum install (testflarum) and has a group of www-data so I don't think it's the issue.

Toby I adjusted the permissions. It is writeable by both www-data and testflarum (I su'd each user and can touch a new file in assets/avatars. It's not saying it doesn't have permission though. It's saying RouteNotFoundException which makes me think it's a redirect issue again..

Why does your flarum installation have its own fastcgi_pass?

Kulga A GET request to /api/users/1/avatar will throw a RouteNotFoundException, but a POST request should not. Are you opening that URL separately to confirm the error? If so, try inspecting the response of the POST request directly in Chrome's inspector to see the real error.

txtd I switched to another pool which started a bunch of permission errors so switched back.. Otherwise no errors (at least reported by nginx)

Figured it out!

ImageMagick module not available with this PHP installation.

Installed php5-imagick and everything is good!

For debian based ->

apt-get install php5-imagick

Toby Alright. No issues with installing extra packages but I can see with other users needing to install extra packages could bring in problems. I like image-magick quite a bit but this ranks it higher in importance 😉

...and we already check for it during installation.

Aesahaettr Unless I'm mistaken, when you attempt to upload with the current version, it attempts to use imagemagick to convert the uploaded image to a usable size. Since imagemagick doesn't exist (the php5 extension of it) it fails and presents a general "error"
If you have it accessible, no error occurs and the file is converted normally and everything processes through.

Is a code correction where the mechanism to manipulate the image was using Imagick an extension to php to use ImageMagick and I am guessing with the code change it will use the GD image library which is more common on share host and initial server stacks.

So because Most share hosts don't have ImageMagick install, trying to upload an image didn't work.

This is one reason why you can't upload an image. But there could be other reasons too so always debug, there could be a file size limit, or a format that is not allowed etc...

So debug to make sure what is going wrong.

Aesahaettr That's up to your hoster. I know nothing of your environment. Only that on my server with debian 7 running, installing php5-imagick fixed the issue.
I'm fairly sure Toby will have another beta next week and it should be fixed at that point.
That may be a better course of action then asking your hoster to install a program to fix something for a week. If you want that level of control - I'd suggest a VPS that provides root (which brings a whole level of complexity if you're not familiar with a terminal)
