Ability to change username

I assume the ability to change usernames will not be possible given the way posts are quoted via @user_name#post_number. Or is this converted to @user_number#post_number before it is stored in the database?

I think it's stored as username sadly, since previous posts on this board, when a user account was removed/deleted, any posts that referenced a deleted user's posts, still had the @user_name#post_number, with "@user_name" still displaying the username, while the actual post had "[deleted]". @Toby is my assumption accurate?

In replying to your post I have changed your username and it doesn't break the reply so I guess that's good news. The side effect seems to be the old name will just stick around. I suppose the other side effect is that @ mentions will be broken. For example @oldzabca will be broken while @zabca will work.

I'd really like the ability to change usernames as well. At least be able to change capitalization of them.

Aesahaettr To clarify I'm not an administrator with the ability to change names in the database. I just changed his user name in the reply to see what would happen.

So in the future we will be able to change our Username and this will also change the usernames in old posts etc since we will call for the username each time we load the page/thread? That would be cool since I made a typo in my name (I had to create a new account to make fix this).

We need to take in account that when a user is deleted we cannot call for a current username, since it doesn't exists anymore?

There are no plans for this that I know of. But we have discussed the possibility of adding an editable user handle to the profile, which could be displayed in place of the user name.

The ability to change a username is nice, but there are situations, like in our planned community (a specific group of content professionals), where we do not want brand names and aliases being used in the community. This is a problem we already have in Google+, and we solved it by requiring requests to join. Any account with a brand name or "Pong Lenus" alias (for example) doesn't get in. We would rather not have to manually manage accounts or go on a "suspend account" rampage just to police the jokers and marketers.

So, long story short, it would be nice if you added a preference in the Permissions panel (maybe under a new "Accounts" section) to allow admins of a given site to choose whether users can edit their usernames or not.

Or both. But a simple setting to disallow changing usernames would go a long way to making it clear that identity changes from seemingly honest to sneaky are not acceptable, and if they chose a bad one to begin with (without reading the rules), they're gone.
