Mail misconfiguration leading to broken forum

Great stuff you guys have here, even in beta. But for some reason when I change the slightest DNS settings or anything it stops working and I need to go back to my original settings. I've been troubleshooting and apparently after putting everything serverwise back to normal the forum "broke itself".

Here's what the Apache error log is spitting out:

I was also trying to get mailing to work with Mailgun and that kept breaking Flarum. Emails would not send for verification ?

The backtrace you posted clearly shows that your mail settings are incorrect. You are trying to create a driver (normally smtp or something) using an IP address..

There are some threads on this forum explaining how to set up Flarum with Mailgun. You can use these as a reference.

Perhaps if you post your mail settings (leave out the pass) we can help you.

luceos Okay, how do I fix the 500 error before we get into fixing the mail bit?

I um, removed the mail stuff from the mySQL db. That leaves me with a 5.009GB error log for Apache... o.O

Here's the repetitive error.

Thanks for that. But my server kinda... I think it was feeling a bit suicidal over night and for some reason so much stuff ain't working now including phpmyadmin. I have NO idea what happened.

0E800 although your input is appreciated, there is absolutely no reason to do a complete new install nor suggest using an install script meant for a clean VPS when we are not even aware about the environment at hand. The mentioned script installs everything, including PHP 7.0, nginx, mysql etc; simply running that script will most likely break more than you'd like to fix.

@XiRealizeX simply has to restart the configuration procedure. The issue is created by messing up the mail configuration. One could easily fix this by manually adding the values in the database, for an inexperienced user restarting configuration is easier however.

luceos Yeah I agree. Installing it was a pain in the first place.

is what happens when I try to connect to the mySQL server through the command line... Grrr, this is so frustrating. My server was completely fine last night, overnight it just mucked up! ?

XiRealizeX can you verify that your mysql server is up? Something like:

sudo service mysql status

Please do share the database server you installed (Mariadb or Mysql)?

I think someone hacked me. MySQL is what I use.

An IP from South Korea is logged several times with a failed password attempt for phpMyAdmin... Looks like a dictionary attack... .___. 85.176.254.25 182.211.169.113

XiRealizeX as long as they don't get in there's no problem. Dictionary attacks are quite usual. Perhaps you should implement fail2ban.

Now onto your issue, it seems mysql is not running, the process exited with status 1/failure. Can you check the /var/log/mysql/ log files for any reasons?

Try identifying the reason, eg;

du -sh /

Then go from there, eg if var is biggest:

I have no idea why the storage would be full. The server has 25GB of storage and I freshly Installed Ubuntu 16.04 on it yesterday...

My host ran some scans and apparently someone somehow managed to get into my server and mess everything up. I guess I just have to reinstall Ubuntu. Thanks for the help mate I really appreciate it, if I need more I'll get back to this.

There are a alot ways in which Flarum can be installed incorrectly.
When I read Luceos's comment "I suggest you remove your config.php and start anew."
I figured since OP was would be starting anew OP might as well use an install script to reduce the amount things that could go wrong.

I misunderstood and understand the meaning for the rebuke.

However it seems in the end, it still might be a good idea for OP to try.

At the least, review the bash script as a resource when installing on your fresh OS.
