Regarding your original issue, this probably means there's been an issue with the icon copy step. Do you have an /assets/fonts folder in your Flarum directory ?
If you do have that folder (with files in it), this must be an issue with your webserver config.
If you don't have that folder, you can fix this by copying /vendor/components/font-awesome/fonts to /assets/fonts manually.
