You should edit css/less files only, if you have created them yourself, i.e. if they belong to your own extension. Otherwise there are good chances, they will be overridden at any time without notice.

Are we talking about an extension you have written? If so, have you compiled the JSX / ES5 style JS into native JS using gulp?

Is the forum js file ever overwritten?

There is a high chance that this happens every time the software is updated.

I'm just editing some of the default wording of Flarum (ex: new topic button).

To change the wording of Flarum elements, you need to edit the .yml file of your language extension. This file may also be overwritten during future updates, but at least that shouldn't break your forum. It would simply undo your changes, which you would have to reapply after an update of the language extension.

I don't know about an autoinstaller, can't say anything about it.

If you install and manage Flarum via Composer, you decide if and when to update.

That being said, I think it's never a good idea to give up your ability to update a software.

You can try adding your own JS files. All you have to do is include them in a header template.
