The difference between Newest and Latest?

Hi,

Can someone explain the difference between Newest and the Latest?
Isn't that really the same thing?
Newest mean that the newest post will be shown, which it does, then what is Latest?
Latest should show the most recent post? Which is the Newest or am I wrong here.
I mean, if I post this thread, it will show in the Newest because it is a New thread, but it also will be shown in Latest because it is the latest thread, in other word, the Newest threads will also be the Latest threads which means the same thing?

iPhone X is the latest phone made by Apple, but it is also the newest phone made by Apple, so... ?

Newest refers to Discussion start times, Latest refers to reply times.

I agree with @DMT, I got confused too the first time.

So why don't we call it 'Newest Discussion' and 'Latest Reply' then? And in the case of 'Oldest', I guess it's the 'Oldest Discussion'. And 'Top' means 'Most Active Discussion'. I think, there's enough space to write it out.

It's quite easy to implement for everyone, just clone a language pack and provide an english <-> english translation for the relevant terms.
