To what extent it is possible to customize Flarum's default interface, via themes( if available) or with tweaks in the code?

You can do anything with tweaks in the code ?

There's currently no proper theme sharing system, but you can easily change the default colors and add custom LESS/CSS via the admin panel. If you want to move stuff around you can use/create extensions and customize every component of the UI via javascript.

Some people shared their custom style on the forum, you might want to check that out.

I personally currently find it pretty easy to setup a minimum "extension" ... containing LESS/CSS - that will be my starting point for theming / adaption.
