I would suggest using imgur for this functionality for the time being. It is a free service and does not require a user account to upload content (though it will periodically ask you to solve a captcha and will limit how many images you can upload without an account)

accalia now there's an idea... Using the imgur API, a user can drag n drop an image into a post, upload it to imgur, and Flarum will spit out the link then embed the image.

That's not something Flarum supports right now. You need to use an external image host for the time being.

then once you have the image hosted the syntax for making the image is:

They have for a while. It's kinda lacking in some areas, but for all intents and purposes it works. I haven't worked with it in some time, so it may have gotten better. Good luck!

wumix what you're looking for is an attachment system then. As of yet, that has not been implemented.

Image hosting sites removes images that are not active for some time. Wondering whether Imgur is a good idea for storage.

Because on the forum I want to create, users will upload lots of pictures and I don't want to depend on a third party.

The image upload feature is not there.

I made an extension called imgur upload. It enables the upload of images from the composer directly to imgur, and the link will be automatically included in the composer. You can find the extension in the extension list 😉
