Miss coding anywhere (old school PHP/JS)

Don’t make fun of me, but, I miss being able to easily mess around with PHP based platforms. WordPress and other platforms are still this way. If you know some PHP, you can easily mess around with the code.

But, more and more, folks are moving towards the way Flarum is. I love Flarum. And, I know things like node.js make apps faster than if you were just using PHP. But, it's just not as portable or easy to work with.

I like the idea of being able to go online, open a file on a server, and change the code. No command line, no downloading things like node.js.

Again, I love Flarum and the direction website coding is going is probably for the best. Evolve or die. Right? I'm just reminiscing.

010101 I absolutely understand where you're coming from.

If it helps a little bit, we're currently trying to make the initial hurdle to building extensions as small as possible, so that you can start by adding a bunch of functions (or method calls) in a single file, for very simple extensions.

Do you mean back when there were no autoloading, namespaces, OOP (wasn't mainstream at the time), etc?

Those were painful times ?

Ralkage Yes! Shouldn't app/website building be painful and slow? Shouldn't we have to walk uphill in the snow while coding? While we're at it can we please bring back Internet Explorer 6. Remember how fun it used to be when everyone was so concerned about adding extra styling and stuff just so their site would be compatible with IE 6?

Ha! A funny related moment just popped into my head. One time, back in the day, I spent days making a website look pretty. Then visited it in IE and was like... "Son of a..."

010101 Evolution.

As we evolve, so does code and so does the Internet. Though, it still can be a hurdle to get to where you want to be and how much you want to know something like the back of your hand, the old ways are still there. It just evolved to the point where repetitive tasks are a thing of the past and there isn't anything as frustrating as repeating the same line of code 200 times in one application ?

Anyone remember the first IBM chip? Pentium chip? Probably not many people here do but we can see how far we've come and how much technology in general has progressed and evolved.

Did you know that the first recorded cyber crime was actually through a loom in the 1820's? Technology has been around since the late BC's but has evolved into something that was not even immaginbale until today.
