Pollux My first thought for representing likes is the same as Facebook. If you like the OP's post, that shows in the stream. If you like other comments on the post (or replies, in a forum context), then that shows once you open the discussion.

Ok sweet, looks like there's enough interest in this that I'll probably share it as an extension and slap the MIT licence on it.
I won't make it look like Facebook so much as copy their idea of showing a "stream". ie: It's for lazy people who aren't yet engaged enough with your platform to click. Sadly, attention is hard to hold these days and (the vast majority of) people online don't really respond well to the forum look.
That being said, I figure adding a button so that a "power user" can turn off the stream would be appreciated.
