A large number of icons is of no value unless these icons are actually used on the website. That holds true for both versions of FontAwesome.
I'm considering stripping down the font files to the icons used on my website. That's less complicated than it seems at first. BirdFont allows you to remove single characters (icons) at will and save the result. Then go to Fontsquirrel's webfont generator, upload your modified FontAwesome's ttf file, and generate the rest of the needed file formats. Then replace them in your /assets/fonts
folder.
