Use Flarum beta.7 or wait for beta.8 to be released ?

I'm considering opening a Flarum instance (for a small community), but seeing that the beta 8 will bring a lot of breaking changes, I would like to know if it is a good idea to wait for beta.8 to be released, or open a beta.7 instance, and update to beta.8 when available.

It depends on the amount of extensions you are going to use, especially if you are going to write them yourself.

If you want to use stock Flarum with only the stock extensions, there is only little benefit in waiting for beta 8. You probably won't see a big difference. The differences are mainly under the hood, they are important only for extension developers. So if you want to rely on one or another non-stock extension, you will have to wait for them to be compatible with beta 8 before you can upgrade to beta 8.

Discourse is a totally different beast and not a good fit for most of those who are intrigued by the simplicity of flarum. If you prefer Discourse over Flarum (be it beta 7 or beta 8) then Flarum might just not be the ideal forum solution for you. No need to assume that others have the same expectations as you.

All depends on your patience but if i was you, my first choice will be Discourse and if it doesn't fit your needs, go with Flarum beta 7. Wait for beta 8 can take a lot of time and you can always upgrade from beta 7 to beta 8.

Wait for Beta 8, it should come out very soon.

Just keep in mind to not install Beta 8 right away from dev-master. dev-master builds are highly unstable and are not recommended for usage (if you're not planning to use it for development.)

The main reason why I turned away on Discourse was the way you had to get things up an running on your own. I mean Docker vs Composer was a no-brainer for a dude like myself who didn't have any knowledge about containers and images ?

As much as it is repeated in this community today, Flarum is still in beta but can be surely used in production given that you are prepared for any updates to break any extensions you have installed. This goes the same for Vbulletin, XenForo, Discourse, etc.

In my case, I use Rancher (and Kubernetes) in order to deploy my services. Discourse, while using Docker containers, don't have any documentation on how to deploy Discourse outside of their own installer script.

Thus, I am considering Flarum as a Discourse replacement. But with the beta 8 milestone at 86%, and some major breaking change coming, I don't know if I should wait for beta 8, or install beta 7 first (and, maybe, stick to the officials addons for now).
