Path of least resistance?

I have been planning a new forum community for a little while now, and while I do love Flarum, I simply can't wait for it to reach production status. So, when Flarum is finally ready, which other forum software will give me the easiest migration path over to Flarum? Esotalk? XenForo? Other?

You're asking us to predict the future. I know that an importer from several popular forum software is planned, esoTalk being among those, but as to when that will happen and in what order I couldn't tell you. I don't think anyone can.

Best advice I can offer is to choose the software you see that fits your current needs and available hardware. I gravitate towards Flarum because of its PHP base, which makes it easier to install on my server alongside many other hosted sites, but you may have the opportunity to dedicate a whole (virtualized) server to your forum, and can choose anything that fits your needs.

I guess it really depends on what you're looking for.

jordanjay29 Thanks for the reply -- it sounds like esotalk is a safer bet than my initial choice of going with NodeBB/Redis. Remember, no matter which forum software I choose, the plan is to migrate to Flarum when Flarum moves out of beta.

By the way, I wasn't asking for a prediction. I imagine it would be a simple answer for those more technically minded than myself.

ron_jeremy Well, again, considering that both of our developers come from two different forum softwares (EsoTalk and FluxBB), using one of those at the moment probably gives you a decent path to upgrade. I think the more difficult part comes in when determining what kinds of themes and extensions will be available for your current software and for flarum, you might get attached to something on another forum software that isn't here, or one that makes importing the user data more tricky (because users get attached to those things).

If you keep the forum pretty barebones, you might have an easier time of it.

Personally, I would guess go with MyBB or similar. Because there would be an importer any way as it is one of the most popular freeware in this category.

I'd go with esoTalk purely due to the fact that Toby created it and has guaranteed that a migration from it will be available.

Given the origins of this software, it is planned to provide importers for at least FluxBB and esoTalk in time for the first final release, yes.

Hey @Franz, I know you can't tell an exact date for the release, but approx. will it be next month or next year? I mean, as said before I'll need to move to FastCGI, and as far as esoTalk is not working with it, I could try to install a Flarum instance and import all the users manually (yeah, lot of works to do), but at least I'll be able to enable FastCGI for all my websites. So excuse me if I'm asking this, but it could be a really helpfull info for me (even approximatively, as said). 🙂
