Is there a way to change the transliteration rules?

Right now an a umlaut ä is transliterated to a but the correct way would be ae. The rules for other German characters are: ö => oe, ü => ue, ß => ss. As only minuscules are used for the URL, so same transliterations should be used for majuscule forms of these letters.

Pollux Some languages have especial replacements for trasliteration, so the transliterator should works based on the language selected.

Languages with special rules are: German - GERMANY (de_DE), Danish - DENMARK (da_DK), Serbian - SERBIA (sr_RS)

In other words, you can modify the trasliterator for german replacements but then, it will not work with other languages like Danish or Serbian.

Pollux Most likely. You might be able to use composer.json provide functionality and not require changes to fof/transliterator, but don't quote me on that;

Pollux You can fork only behat/transliterator and add your fork in repositories section of composer.json of your app - your fork should replace original implementation without need of changing anything in fof/transliterator.

But fof/transliterator could switch to better transliteration library - there are implementations using transliteration from intl, which should handle any locale-specific transliteration correctly.

rob006 We could add a dropdown menu for admins to choose which implementation to use. That shouldn't be too hard.

rob006 Meant on our side, changing the extension to allow for selection of different transliteration implementations. We could have the transliteration packages be suggested when installing, and also show which one is needed when selecting through the settings modal.

datitisev Wouldn't be easier to just use transliterator_transliterate() if intl is available and fallback to default transliterator if not? Yii transliterator works in that way.

Crypto77777 If you don't have a composer.json file in the Flarum directory, you may want to open a support dioscussion as that's not related to this extension.

Every once in a while there are users in this community asking for the possibility to remove the discussion title from the slug alltogether, e.g. here.

This could be easily achieved by adding one more "transliteration" option in /src/Transliterator.php. What do you think @datitisev?

As Littlegolden mentioned, his solution is not a stable one. You should try to avoid changes to the core files whenever possible. It looks fine now, but it will give you a lot of headaches later.

Coming back to my suggestion earlier to use the Transliterator extension. I asked the maintainer of that extension how to add your goal as a special kind of "transliterator". Here is his answer:

You find extend.php in your flarum folder, you can edit it to your needs without having to worry for the future. Of course you need to install URL Transliterator by FriendsOfFlarum as well.

You added that blank option yourself in your extend.php file, how can there be a translation provided by others?

If you want to see a translation there, you need to provide it yourself. I use my own custom language pack, so it was quite easy for me to add a translation. If I hadn't one already I would probably do without a translation.
