Discuss(.flarum.org) has been updated, in preparation of the beta 9 release, to the latest development version, including all core extensions.

@luceos I'm excited as well! By the way, are there any changes to the requirements? I'd like to run it with PHP 7.2 and Maria DB 10.

SHC Not as far as PHP version requirements go. There are probably some issues with PHP 7.3 (because of dumb breaking changes), but you should be good.

EDIT: MySQL 5.6.0 or later is now required (previously 5.5.0). MariaDB is now officially supported. PHP 7.3 seems to be supported as well.

So where can I find out more info for the beta 9 and what will be included / excluded, do I need to uninstall the current version in order to upgrade?

myorangeca No need to uninstall the previous version. When beta 9 is released, we will publish an announcement with the most notable changes and upgrade instructions.

You can find the unreleased changes in our CHANGELOG.md.

Pretty much all preparations for beta 9 are concluded. We are finishing up on our announcement(s) before we can release it. One thing I'll mention right off the bat is that we will tremendously improve our release cycle immediately after beta 9.

@luceos Please, remember to take into consideration those, who still uses beta7 (due to problems with upgrading plugins). We will probably have to first upgrade to beta8? Or is it going to be handled automatically?

Staszek What would be handled automatically here ? Third party extensions are not managed by the Flarum team, so I'm not sure what you would want them to do.

Have you thought about contacting the extension owners and/or Friends of Flarum to update the extensions you need ?

Staszek we are going to move forward with releasing beta 9 regardless of the state of third party extensions. Because a release is paramount for extensions developers to upgrade their extensions to a definite compliant state. Most, if not all, extensions that work with beta 8 are still compatible with beta 9.

As to extensions that aren't compatible with beta 8 yet, these are your options:

contact the extension developer to update it (best asked inside the discussion or on the github repository)
contact friends of flarum to request the upgrade (best asked on discord).
upgrade (and fork) the extension yourself
find a replacement
remove the extension

Any of these steps might prove more successful with a reward offered. Once we release a stable release, extensions will show a longer compatibility period.

I'm not asking about extensions. I know that I have to handle it myself. I also know the options. I'm asking about the core. I have beta7. If I decide, that there are enough extensions for me compatible with beta9, will there there any automatic way to upgrade from beta7 to beta9, or will I have to first upgrade to beta8? It would be great if instructions for upgrade take this into consideration.

Running composer update flarum/core will automatically bring you to beta 9 when it is released. If you upgrade this way without following the upgrade guide to beta 8 from beta 7 you might run into serious issues. Because, among others, that guide specifically mentions extensions might be broken.

Extension is only one thing, it's obvious for me that extensions will not be compatible.

I don't remember any announcement, that beta7.2 is vulnerable. Was there any? I know I should upgrade, but as I said, I cannot do it easily, because some extensions are important, but not finished for beta8 (or maybe finished, but I have to test it). I'm going to do it soon, but I may not do it before release of beta9

EDIT: I meant there should be guide on how to upgrade from beta7 to 8 after release of 9. I suppose after beta 9 release composer will try to do direct upgrade to beta9, instread of beta 8. So some command in 7->8 guide will probably change.

There will be a guide on how to upgrade from beta 8 to beta 9. Which will be much simpler than what it takes to update from beta 7 to beta 8.

To update from beta 7 to beta 9, you will have to go through the same steps as updating to beta 8 anyhow, so there's really no reason to rewrite that upgrade guide. Nothing interferes with it in the beta 9 upgrade instructions.

Apologies if I didn't make much sense lol. What I'm trying to say is, to update to beta 9 (from beta 7), you'll still have to do the same stuff as when updating to beta 8, same steps, so rewriting those instructions would be pointless.

datitisev I think he/she means just that, writing explicitly that the upgrade procedure only works from beta8 to beta9, and that if you're still on beta7 you should first do the 7 => 8 upgrade. I can imagine that one would want to do the upgrade in two steps (7 => 8 and 8 => 9), but not everyone knows how to make sure you're doing that with Composer (will that even be possible after beta9 is out?)
