Beta 9 to 10 Forum Not Loading

I followed the upgrade steps to go from beta 9 to 10. All was going well. Finished the steps and started re-activating all of the extensions. Then cleared my cache and went to the main page and I got the read only version of the site like you’d get if JavaScript is disabled. My log says this:

Edit: Removed log. What I pasted here was a log from a different error. It had nothing to do with my forum not loading after upgrading. Actually, nothing was logged for this. It seems to be an incompatible extension causing it.

Not in front of my computer right now but there is a way to ssh in and disable extensions

Well, I decided to just use my backup and revert back to beta 9. Then I repeated the upgrade process. This time, I only reactivated the core extensions. The forum loads fine.

I’m scared to activate any other extension because I know one or two of them most likely will lock me out of my forum if I activate them.

I also reinstalled a few small extensions I’ve made. They work fine.

I may have to wait until every extension developer confirms their extension works on beta 10, or take a chance and start re-activating more extensions.

I'm glad that everything works fine now.

But I'm siding here with MikeJones: If activating an extension causes trouble the solution is in most cases just an SSH command away. And it's wise to reactivate one extension after the other and testing the forum after each round.

Can you run php flarum info? This should give us an idea of what extensions you have installed and how to disable them.

Here are the extensions I have not reactivated. I assume the problem is one of these. There’s a lot. If Friends of Flarum can confirm all of theirs work that would narrow it down.

I'm confused. I went for it and reactivated all extensions. Everything works.

The only thing I can think of, which may not be it, is the first go-round I tried installing fof/ban-ips forgetting that it's not compatible with my set up due to the database version needed. But I deactivated it as soon as I got an error. However, maybe the act of trying to install it did something. But, that’s probably not it. It most likely was just a little gremlin messing with me.

I have two Flarum forums. I just upgraded the other one with no issues. The only thing I did differently was I did not try to activate fof/ban-ips or the fof username request extensions. Neither are compatible due with my Maria db version. And so, I have two potential theories about why my forum would not fully load for the first upgrade attempt:

1) Even though my SSH client said all files upgraded, maybe there was one file that didn’t quite make it to my server.
2) Or, because I tried to activate an incompatible extension which adds things to the database, perhaps one of those extensions, even though the activation failed, was able to add things to the database. Which caused silent errors because Flarum didn’t understand what was going on in my database. I don’t know if maybe @datitisev could confirm and say yes, this could be possible. Or, no, there’s no way something like ban-ips failing to activate could hurt anything.

I’m all good now. But, if activating an incompatible extension could cause this even if you deactivate the extension, then this would be good to confirm for future upgraders. Side note: Even though this may not have been the cause, if there isn’t one already, there should be a big warning in the main post for those extensions that they are only compatible with Maria DB version X and up. Or, can they be made compatible with older DB versions? 🙂

Not sure about fof/username-request, but a failure when enabling fof/ban-ips shouldn't break the whole forum... as the extension only creates a new table and doesn't modify existing tables or columns. Theoretically, anyway. 🤷‍♂️
