Dev Diary: Beta 13

I'll share an update as well, recently I've opened PRs for:

A rewrite of my CSRF Exemption extender PR (flarum/core2095)
Sending emails in core through a queue (flarum/core2096), thanks to @luceos for getting that ball rolling!
Refactoring the Formatter extender, adding more methods (flarum/core2098)
Adding a Model extender, which supports setting relationships, date attributes, and default attributes (flarum/core2100)
Adding a Post extender, which supports registering custom post types (flarum/core2101)
Adding a Validator extender, which supports configuring the validator (eg to add/remove/replace/modify rules) (flarum/core2102)
A refactor of the search system, which brings our current search-related components under one system, which can then be expanded on in later versions, as well as a Search extender to add gambits (used for filtering queries and performing the actual search) (flarum/core2104)
Adding a User extender, which supports filtering/changing a user's groups dynamically when calculating permisions (flarum/core2110)
An events extender, which will let extensions listen in to domain events (such as created, deleted, etc) issues by core and extensions. (flarum/core2097)

I've also done some work on non-core stuff, including:

luceos Just updated discuss with the latest Flarum (core) version.

Having deployed the latest version (and breaking some discussions that had posts from deleted users), I deployed two fixes again to discuss. The one mentioned and another that fixes post notifications generated by the subscriptions extension.

I'm becoming quite knowledgeable about this new development method DDD; discuss driven development!

Today, we made some good progress towards the next beta release. I focused my work day on the issues and PRs that were planned for beta.13, went through and commented on many of them.

For everyone contributing to the current pile of pull requests, thank you all so much! 🤗 Next week, we are planning on going through that list and getting more of them merged.

In more detail:

Updated some insecure third-party JS dependencies in core
Restored backwards compatibility for notification blueprints
Merged several PRs, e.g. new extenders and more work on the queue (which should lead to better performance)
Continued my work on upgrading Flarum to v5.8 and then v6.x of Laravel components
Caused many GitHub notifications

I am also proud of our many contributors who are participating in slowly moving towards better test coverage of our backend, by adding tests to their PRs. I have already felt the benefits a couple of times.

I know we haven't been really communicative these past few weeks. Though I'd like to blame COVID-19, which has impacted the lives of many - including ours, the reality is much different.

Great strides have been made, we're well within schedule for our Beta 13 release 🎉 This progress is primarily due to the unrelenting dedication of our newest trainee @askvortsov and our technical lead @Franz. Aside from their ability to commit to creating and reviewing pull requests, the rest of the team has been taking care of improving processes and continuing work on tasks for future releases.

Even though I am having a hard time getting anything done, I'm exceptionally proud of everyone who's been pushing us forward, team- and community members alike. The Coronavirus might have increased the social distance, I'm hoping that Flarum is able to bridge the gap for many communities out there.

I do want to note that despite my sudden busy schedule due to the virus adding work stuff and the extra stress it's added to my weeks this past weekend I refactored flarum/core2113

At some point this week I also plan on making user account force activation (something only admins can do) into a permission so that it can be assigned to other roles if the administrator wants.

Is flarum built on the Zend (now Laminas) framework?

HisAl it uses Laravel/Illuminate which also uses Laminas, we also use some Laminas directly.

luceos omg still beta 13 we are waiting for stable ver since 2017.

ccsol We now release on a fairly consistant cycle, further the fronted and general use of Flarum is fairly stable. The part that's still marked as beta really is the extension API.

ccsol Just an FYI Gmail was labeled as a beta product for 5 years.

Is there any plan to fix the redirection issue or lack thereof, when loading a page that requires authentication?
Right now if one tries to access a page that requires to be signed in, the person gets "The page you requested could not be found." instead of redirecting to the login page and then redirecting the person back to the page requested after authentication.

This leads to a lot of confusion from users... many who do not know they need to authenticate just think the page doesn't exit due to error... this is NOT a good user experience.

Any idea when this will be implemented?

My apologies for the silence. My personal situation has been affected quite much with COVID-19. Battling to get some work done aside from having the kids at home has made it extremely hard to concentrate and focus.

Aside from that I'm stoked to let you know we entered the QA stage for Beta 13. This means we're well on schedule to release the thirteenth beta this month 🥳
