Step-by-step tutorial: how to install flarum without public paths

rolando Hello guys,

Thanks for putting this tutorial up as it greatly helped me point my site to mydomain.com instead of mydomain.com/public which It made me pull my hairs for a couple of days trying to figuring it out. However, after doing so I am now having problems apparently with the assets. Changing colors, from light to dark mode or turning on the colored header doesn't do anything.

Any ideas on how can this be fixed?

Valeyard thanks for your reply. I actually followed those steps but didn't knew what to put on 'public' => __DIR__, so what worked for me was what OP suggested 'public' => '/home/customer/www/domain.com/public_html', if not then all I get is a blank page.

rolando you put in exactly what it shows you, __DIR__. It's a variable that means the execution path.

I tried something like 'public' => '../folder that has public files' and didn’t work... can you give me an example of what you mean as I didn't understand?

You put in:

'base' => __DIR__,
'public' => __DIR__,
'storage' => __DIR__.'/storage',

Valeyard hmm so how will it work if the public folder no longer exist or has changed?

maybe this will clarify what i mean. i am on a shared hosting. so my directory structure will be something like:

public_html/flarum (which has everything except what the public folder had)
public_html/mysite (which has all the files that were inside the public folder, additionally has the domain name pointed to it)

so my understanding is that i need to go back and enter the mysite folder where site.php resides in

private-folder/public_html ?

I know some of the most popular shared hosts allow this. To go one level below public. This is the ideal shared host set up:

private-flarum-files/public_html/public-files

Then you edit the paths in the appropriate files to point to the right directories.

thanks for answering. do you mean just creating a folder before public_html called "private_folder" with a public_htmlfolder inside?

rolando Create folder below public_html. Put all Flarum files there except public folder. Then in public_html put files that are in the public folder.

I can create folders before public_html yes, thing is that I have several domains assigned to that hosting account. so inside the public_html folder I have the files for the main domain site, plus all folders specific for each domain assigned to the hosting account :/

rolando That shouldn’t matter. You put the public files in a publicly available folder. Then the other core files a step below public_html. The tricky part sometimes is getting the paths right. The paths a level below in site.php, and then also the right paths in the public_html index.php file.

Here’s an example file structure in order… We’ll call the folder with all files except the public folder “flarum”:

Folders:

flarum (in here are most Flarum files except the public folder and files in the public folder)
public_html (in here are the Flarum files from the public folder that comes with Flarum - you won’t actually have a folder called “public” here - just the files from that folder)
other folders you have

as OP pointed out ^ that actually worked for me in getting rid of the public folder in the url, tho like i said on my first post my assets got messed up, couldn't change colors, dark mode and colored headers stopped working.

i was checking out files inside assets and noticed a few .js files that had the /public/ folder in the url. I tried changing those but that didn't work either

Now that i think about it, that won't work for me since I have to have a folder for the assigned domain which is located inside public_html in order for the domain assigned to work
