What are the terms of GPL 2 license ? What if I take a part of the repo with GPL 2, modify it and keep it on a Github repo under my name ? Which license will I have to adhere ?

meetdilip are you referring to a specific piece of software used by Flarum or an extension? Most of those use the MIT license.

If you have obtained some code under a GPL license, it should include a copy of the terms of that license or a link to such terms.

If you're trying to choose a license, I suggest heading over to https://opensource.org/licenses or https://choosealicense.com/

Discussing licenses in general is fine, but we don't provide legal advice on this forum. If it's related to a copyright owned by the Flarum Foundation, you should probably get in touch privately with the Flarum board.

I forgot to mention the full context. It is Inkscape I am dealing with

These are their terms. But I am not good at understanding such terms. It will be a great help if you could tell me how I can deal with it. To be honest, I made it for personal use. But I don't mind sharing it as it looks good.

In short, I took a few icons from the Inkscape repo and has modified it. If I can label the appropriate license, I will put it in Github or Gitlab. Otherwise, I will keep it for myself. I do not want to be part of any legal hassle only because I tried to share my hardwork 🙂

As Clark noted however we don't/won't provide legal advice. If you have concerns about a license I would recommend reaching out to the copyright owner (in this case Inkscape)

Thanks both of you. Very helpful links.

I was hoping to use GPL 3 as Inkscape support said anything GPL 2 + is allowed. GPL 3 would prevent closed source packaging.
