Wadera this would make for a perfect extension! 😉 Ideally, someone can either hook into the Suspend extension and add an option for shadow/soft banning or just simply make a new extension altogether and make the extension name discrete as to not give away it’s purpose initially if a tool were used to figure out what extensions are installed on a forum 😉 😉

I don't think this would make for a particularly useful feature. If you have a problem user who creates multiple accounts, and then you "shadow ban them" they will soon cotton on to the fact that other users aren't engaging. As soon as they log out/go incognito in the browser/ they will realise that their posts aren't showing up.

I think the better solution is for forum admins/mods to be able to approve new posters

MartinJD The reason behind this extension is to prevent them to "creating multiple accounts" by shadowbanning them in advance. If they don't notice it - you are set 😉

On top of that - some forums are closed and posts are visible only for logged in users, so if they logout - thy won't see any posts anyway - that's harder to spot if they are shadowbanned!

There used to be an extension called " Annoy user " for another platform. Which is the opposite of what we are talking. It annoys the troll with features like " posting failed, try again ", " topic is locked " and with a variety of errors which only the troll will experience. The idea is to annoy the troll so much that he stops whatever he is trying on the board.

meetdilip Vbulletin had an add-on called "Miserable Users" which acted the same way, it was the first of it's kind and even showed the user weird error messages as well. XenForo adopted this feature in XenForo 2 natively, but I forget what the called it. It's actually part of user group creation as an option if I'm not mistaken 🤣

To those that are interested in the Reddit-styled shadow banning system, it isn't impossible to create as an extension, it just takes someone with time and resources in order to develop it effectively 😉
