Edit and Rename placement (Topic)

These functions are currently under "Reply Button". Does anyone agree that it should be replaced somewhere else? Or have another button between reply & follow? Or put them with the "edit button" under topic starter's post (3 dots)?

Where would you put them? What would you prefer?

I like it the way it is, but that doesn't mean things cannot be changed, if there's a good alternative.

Franz I mean, topic starters will never suspect that rename is under the reply button. It's good to have all edit functions in one place and will not confuse users.

Possible locations:

Include it with "Edit function" (3 dots, pencil icon - under topic)
or, relocate/add the whole edit functions between "Reply & "Follow" only visible to topic starters, Mod, Admin.

Hmm, I think I agree about this. I know I was confused about this in the very beginning, too.

Maybe we should have another dropdown button with moderation-like controls (such as editing, deletion, moving etc.) instead of grouping it within the "Reply" button.

What do you think, @Toby? Is there something we're forgetting here?

Franz Won't you just run up against the same problem? Someone arguing that Lock shouldn't be grouped with a topic editing function, for example. I guess I don't see the issue here, functions that modify the topic (including reply) are grouped right now. Those that leave it alone (follow) are grouped.

Also "Reply" is the only control in that dropdown that doesn't seem to affect the thread as a whole. Replying does add to the thread, but the attention in that case is focussed on the new post that's being created. All the other commands, by contrast, affect the entire thread.

It's semantic nitpicking, perhaps, but it helps explain why some users might find it unintuitive.

I'm open to change if we can come up with a nice alternative, but one thing to consider is how this will work responsively (i.e. on the mobile interface). Currently the "Reply" dropdown turns into an ellipsis in the top-right which is a good place to access all actions that can be performed on the discussion... if we split it into two buttons, where would the second one go on mobile?

Of course, we'll need to overhaul the mobile discussion view as part of #867 anyway – I still need to mock that up. So I'll take this into consideration when I do that.

Toby I really like the last layout you made. Looks like It is very easy navigate & understand. And i think that is a perfect layout for mobile.

My moderation & other tools suggestion (mobile):

Discourse got it right on this functions (mobile). And i think this is the best solution to Flarum's issue on mobile layout. (This icons are placed under user's post)

Desktop

This is also good for desktop version and replace the current one. "3 dots" can be removed and just let users do one click on everything.
If not, current desktop setup can remain as is, as long as all tools can be access in one place.

P.S.

Things that needs fixing:

1. Edit Tool
- Place all edit/mod tools in one place (some functions only visible to creator & mods).

2. Reply
- Remove dropdown menu "Rename" and move it to edit/mod tools.
- Make it just a reply button and nothing else.

3. Mobile Layout (tools)
- Please see screenshot above
- My proposal can also be applied on desktop version.

With Flarum's extensibility, I don't know if Discourse's method makes sense. If someone decides to add a new feature to discussions which required a three new buttons, where would they go? The ... menu allows for a nearly infinite amount of options to be added, and does it gracefully.

This is why i pointed this out, If ever my suggestion won't work :

If not, current desktop setup can remain as is, as long as all tools can be access in one place.

So if 3 dots remains. Edit, Flag, Share, Bookmark can be placed in 3 dots menu (same format as current).
If someone adds new discussion functions it can be put under 3 dots menu.
All editing functions will be placed in "Edit" (some functions are only visible to creator & mods).

The whole point of this is to put all tools, most specially editing tools in one place and not confuse users.
