Poke user / remind about a post

There's an often occurrence on forums where users say they will get back to a thread in a few days with some more information regarding the topic and they forget to do so. Usually it's something like this:

#1 Jason, 1st of March: "I am testing this equipment now. I will let you know if it's good in a few days"
#2 Paul, 1st of March: "Oh great, I'm looking forward to it!"
#3 Paul 15th of April: "Jason, did you get a chance to take a look at it?"
#4 Jason, 15th of April: "Oh yeah, I actually forgot about this thread. The equipment is great, I recommend it!"

My idea is that instead of posting #3, Paul could use a button next to post #1 that would send an email notification to Jason saying: "User Paul would like to remind you about your post #1 from 1st of March. Click here to visit the thread".

Basically, you can just mention (@mention) the user on that topic and it will notify the intended user.
The upcoming messaging system will handle that pretty well (PM the user to remind him/her about the topic).
Also, if users are following that topic they'll be notified every new posts.

That does sound handy ... except I'd put the button next to post #1. That would automatically provide the poke function with the following necessary information:

Who to poke
Which post to remind them about

If the button were next to post #2, the person doing the poking would have to supply that information manually.

Sounds like jacko wants a method to basically do that but without a PM or post. I'd expect an extension doing this would be handled via the notification settings (either notify on Flarum, or by email, or both).

jordanjay29 I understand what he wants but what I just posted does effectively the same thing plus it is more personal than a automated message.

That would certainly be the way to go. It could be essentially the same as Likes, except that nothing would get displayed beneath the post ... and maybe it should be possible for the same person to poke someone about the same post more than once. That would need some discussing, though.

jordanjay29 jordanjay29 I'm sort of divided between these two viewpoints. I like the personal approach too, but I also like the idea of a convenient button. And like the Likes extension, it could help save on forum clutter (though perhaps not to the same degree).

@clarkwinkelmann Hi, sir. How about taking this into consideration for the next update on your freshly-baked poke extension? That would be great and much more useful too 😄

jvloo it certainly isn't much different. And there would be a use for the notification subject here.

I won't do it (at least not in the near future), but anyone is welcome to take inspiration from https://github.com/clarkwinkelmann/flarum-ext-poke to make such an extension!

I think about an extension to Byobu (or an additional functionality) that allows to contact the author of a given post via private messaging. There could be an additional entry to the ... menu of each post that says Contact this post's author which opens a PM discussion with the post included as a quote. Such a function could easily be used to just poke a post author but it would allow much more.
