Suggestion: Inline avatar badges

Dominion Still, while I think the little pushpin and lock icons are fine as they are, the little wrench next to luceos' name doesn't say "Hey, this guy's an admin!" the way the avatar badge does. It needs a bit more oomph.

I'm fine with this. Put the whole badge, not just the FA icon, on the username line then? The circle background should make it pop enough.

I see what you mean, but that doesn't bother me quite as much as the ones on the index (which tend to cover the eyes on the avatar, if a portrait photo is used). Even after Toby made the index badges smaller, the fact that they cover the upper part of the face has continued to bug me a little.

I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to show just the single "most important" group badge on the avatar, and display the full collection of badges on the profile popup? An arrangement like that would also be useful to an extension that adds badges for achievements or other gamification schemes.

(I'm not sure how Flarum would decide which group badge is the most important, though.)

Perhaps differentiate between those with mod / admin powers and those that don't? Also perhaps relevant badges. Eg displaying a Docu badge for a discussion requiring a Docu badge to view / reply to a thread

Kulga Yeah, I don't know that you could algorithmically determine a hierarchy that's going to be accurate each time. At best you're really just guessing. If a site needs/wants to have all those badges displayed, they're probably not going to enjoy the trimming feature. If such a thing existed, I think it'd be better as a manual control on the admin (display badge per group) or user (choose which badges to show) side.

Maybe we need to see a mockup of different ways to display the badge not on the avatar, though. Different avatars are going to look different with the badges, and someone with an element to the top-right is going to get screwed either way. Or the badges are going to cover up an element so as to make the avatar look inappropriate for the community. I think the badges on avatars is a nice idea, but it might cause more problems than they're worth.

This is the conclusion I came to. We've already got a related issue in issue 845, so it could be handled as part of that. Each group could have three display option settings:

Show badge on avatars
Show badge on profile only
Hide group membership

That would give admins the ability to determine how many badges get shown in discussions.

Yes! and thanks for the mockups! The circled icons do indeed pop out a bit more. I'm not sure the the discussion status icons need to be circled in the index view, but the moderator and admin badges are much harder to miss.

Kulga I know that's technically a problem, but until we start seeing this in a non-made-up real-world scenario, I wouldn't consider this a bug.

Even two or three badges are going to start covering significant parts of the avatar. Having some kind of display solution, be it moving the badges, or choosing which ones to show, is probably a good idea. I can probably put together a mockup tomorrow if MirHamid doesn't beat me to it.

jordanjay29 i love the idea of group badges circling your avatar.. Not sure whether that was meant as a joke, but I think that might work up to a higher limit than the current implementation.

If a user with lots of badges encircles (overlap) his whole avatar, then those badges won't be recognizable for other users, because those badges are covering each other.

Topic badges on the other hand can be place based on @MirHamid 's suggestion. Which i think is the perfect place for it. Or maybe on the corner right of that line instead of left corner?

Title badges can also be on top or below the avatar (ideally, under the avatar), without overlapping user's avatar.
Avatar is there for a reason and it's not a good idea to overly covered it with badges.

Other forums have the idea of users having a 'primary group' that would be displayed. The rest would be displayed in the user's profile. I'm not sure this is a good practice though...

Davis The thing is we are not that "other forums". Flarum is totally different with others players out there.

Showing users what are the "roles" of that individual (like the current setup) is very effective for the community for them to know who is who and properly addressed the issue to the right person. Putting other title on that person's profile is not a good idea.

On the other hand, Rewards, Reputation & Warning can be placed on user's profile.

Digital in some comunities a user may be a part of many groups. Shouldn't the user select one or two that are most significant? Because if everyone has 8 or so groups then it's hard to recognize what they are without reading everything

Davis I am assuming you are talking about groups such as community groups? If so, that definitely goes to user's profile.

I believe we are talking about rank groups here such as Member, Moderator, Admin.

AkshajNalavade I could be wrong, but I don't think MirHamid was actually proposing to do this as a mod. I think he was just suggesting a change to the default UI.
