Recommended MySQL version?

Dear Flarum community!
I read through installation instruction and it is stated to use Flarum with MySQL 5.7 or higher. However, it is not stated if Flarum is supported by MySQL 8.x?

The problem is that MySQL 5.7 EOL is in 3 years and I would like to avoid upgrading MySQL in 3 years if I could already set up Flarum in higher version like MySQL 8.x

So which versions of MySQL Flarum was tested with and which versions are recommended and future proofed?

almalino I think either works, but others will probably know better. If you find any issue with MySQL 8, definitely let us know because we will want to support it in the future anyway if that's not already the case.

Keep in mind you will need to update both Flarum and PHP during those next 3 years as well. The requirements for Flarum will also keep changing as we drop support for EOL dependencies.

almalino 5.5 was severely outdated when AWS pulled the plug on it. Notably the EOL on MySQL 5.5 was December 3, 2018 so AWS continued to run it for nearly another full 2 years. I would expect that they will do the same for 5.7. A note on Flarum though is that as clarkwinkelmann pointed out is that we will continue to change our requirements and drop EOL products and support newer ones as we publish updates.

@clarkwinkelmann Thank you for the reply! Another reason why I am asking is because I host my services on AWS and 3 month ago Amazon send around a message that MySQL 5.5 will not be supported in 3 months and all RDS DB services will be automatically upgraded to 5.7. But my other services were not designed/tested for 5.7 so it was 3 hard month to make sure everything works with 5.7 and then upgrade. So I could expect AWS drop support for 5.7 in 3 years in a similar fashion. And I wanted to avoid similar hard months checking if services works with MySQL 8.0.

PS: On a side note this is first time ever I write messages in Flarum engine and it is a nice experience 🙂 I can see here features replicating Slack behavior that is pretty cool.

Hi there @almalino @clarkwinkelmann , we're in the same position.

Are you able to confirm that Flarum supported MySQL8.x after your migration?

We're currently running the below and are looking to go to mySQL8
Flarum 1.2.0 & MySQL 5.7

I couldn't find a compatibility matrix - but apologies if I've just missed it.

jamieCr MySQL 8 works. It's the version this forum uses.
