[Feature request] Allow Users to tag themself (or add to specific groups)

It would be great if we can allow users tag themselfs / add to predefined groups.

Example usage:

Set role on game forum (like healer, tank, etc)
Set role on some tech forum (like coder, UX designer, graphic designer, etc)

Additional options:

Permissions: only some verified member of the forum can manage thier own tags
Set limit of number of tags / groups allowed (like only one or no limit)
Set colour and Icon for group 😉
Ability to search and list all users on specific group / tag

I can consider sponsoring creating Extension like that.

I had a similar idea about user managed groups here ctml with a couple example use cases. If something like self managed groups came to existence I'd love to see something like

group types: public (anyone can join), private (invite only)
permission controlling who can add/remove users from the group (ie. so there could be a user who is owner of the group, or the owner IS a group... group inception hehe 🙂.. a group that has permissions over another group).

clarkwinkelmann can do this but it's incompatible with latest version of Flarum. Maybe you can sponsor to this extension.

ctml Looks like some version of this has been discussed in a few places recently! askvortsov is another.

In the long term (maybe for Flarum v2.0), I would like to see a radical revamp to the group system with some kind of hierarchy, the ability for group self-management, and an update to the groups/permissions admin page that scales better as the numbers of groups and tags increases drastically. I like group types as a concept: we could even separate permission groups from non-permission groups, so some could be purely aesthetic, maybe...

askvortsov that sounds fantastic. I know we aren't even at v1.0 yet though, so I guess it will be quite a ways out. However, the future of flarum sure does sound exciting 🙂 something to look forward to.

That way I've think of right now. Creating extension for that should be rather simple. It will be just aesthetic and informative for others and looks better than text description in profile.

That doesn't sound too complicated to make as a community extension.

My existing group invitation extension indeed implements part of this, but if you don't need private invitations and usage limits, it doesn't even need to be that complex. Adding a button in the user settings to join/leave a group is relatively easy.

It's more complex if you need some kind of requirements to join or leave.

As long as it's only for separate set of groups (more like tags / roles), so users can't join into Moderator group, then it will be enough 😉
