[deleted] that depends. If you set up your disks for mirroring you usually should be safe, but:

what if all mirrored disks break at once
what if your home server is hit by lightning
what if your home server is hacked

Hence, make backups, off site (so on another machine in another location) regularly.

This discussion isn't really about the first question in your OP, so I renamed the subject.

But answering your question; we are waiting for the last couple of extensions to be patched for v1.0 before we do the upgrade. Discuss has been adopting more and more community extensions and as such face the same challenges everyone else has. That is also a reason we are committed to assist and support extension developers in patching their extensions with each release.

If all goes well we should be able to upgrade discuss the coming week(s).

As explained in the upgrade guide, you need to set flarum/core to ^1.0.

And please stop posting the same answer everywhere. We love helping you, but seeing your question pop up in multiple discussions is just tiresome.
