TLDR: There will never be a day that we will make everyone happy with Byobu. Two people who make no money whatsoever on maintaining this extension cannot be expected to maintain code of that magnitude.
Marco I understand your frustration but hear me out.
Byobu was created to become a simple extension that would utilize the ability to make discussions private. By just doing that and relying on the functionality of other extensions a world would open up. It never had the ambition to become a full fledged private messaging system.
I became less involved in Byobu, without blaming people, the extension was shaped to meet the needs of those that were most vocal, to make it a private messaging extension. At first I was happy that a much needed feature was provided. The drawback of this approach was that features that people sought from private discussions were lost (ability to publish a private discussion for instance).
Ian - as the only other maintainer having nurtured Byobu with bug fixes and patches - and I sat together (well not literally obviously) to talk about the complexity that this extension has become and the hardships of actually maintaining it. That's when we settled on going back to the original idea of a Private Discussions extension. And that is a vision we will defend. We will guarantee the survival of Byobu by holding onto our own ideas of what needs to go into the extension.
So yes, this means that we also have to disappoint people with feature X or Y; features that appeal to a few or many but which simply do not make sense inside our goal for Byobu. The joy of open source allows anyone to create a fork, make the changes you need and use it (even without publishing). Yes, even you Marco, because - if you really want - you can ask/hire someone to get things the way you want.
peopleinside Byobu is the only one extension that are stable compatible, that allow private discussion to be reported and to be more similar to a private message system.
I am terribly sorry that Ian has done such a great job at actually making Byobu compatible for stable. Had he known it would have caused this much pain in the community he would probably have delayed it by a few months (sarcasm off).

Bold font is seen as shouting. Your issue has been reported before. Respect developers that spent their uncompensated time to solve your problems, please! You have no right to demand anything. If you have a problem with something and the solution is taking too long by the maintainer you might look to get the problem solved through other means (by yourself or by finding someone capable to do it for you; paid or not - but by then you might as well pay the maintainer to make it worth their time). I am going to stress this; you haven't paid for a product, you have no right to demand support or features or updates; this is called entitlement.

If you modify code in an extension and notice other extensions (like byobu) are misbehaving it's your responsibility to find a solution unless you can prove the same behavior happens with unmodified code.

Because we decided against that. That's the right a maintainer has. You have no clue how much time Byobu has taken from Ian and myself these past years. And you just take it for granted and complain that it is not what you want? You don't need to build an extension from zero, please do fork Byobu, add the features you want and release it under a different name.

We all start somewhere, my first extension (default-group) took me over two months to write and it hardly does a thing. You can't expect to be at Ian's level within a week.
peopleinside I'm not a programmer so I cannot do. I have no idea on how exclude private discussion from being showed in all discussion and how made sticky work on private discussion.
You can learn, you can ask questions, you can try. Have you seen the stellar steps that @Justoverclock made these past couple of months?

With stable things look favorably. I bet an actual private messages extension should be available within the year. I think we should count ourselves lucky that Byobu is still maintained, if it wasn't for the fabulous people from @FriendsOfFlarum and primarily @IanM it would have been incompatible.
