While this seems like an OK idea, I think it would detract from the experience of discuss. While we do use a lot of community extensions I think that a rich editor would do two things:
- Make discuss slower to load (thus bad first impressions of the framework as a whole)
- Result in people expecting it to already be a feature on default Flarum installs
While we have added a lot of community extensions to discuss to make moderation easier, add a menu to the top, and some other small user facing changes I think that adding a rich text editor might be taking it just a step to far.
Besides the two points already raised, discuss is basically the poster child for a well run Flarum forum with for the most part a "base" user experience. While I 100% see the benefits of adding the extension I also see some downsides we would need to weigh.
I think once we solve the JS splitting issue it'd be an awesome idea since the rich editor would then only be loaded for members/members who choose it. Bit right now when all the JS is compiled into one massive file I have my concerns.
Note: that this is my personal opinion/view, not the views of the Flarum Team has a whole
