Install latest Flarum on Digital Ocean

Hi, Can anyone please help me install Flarum on a droplet on Digital Ocean?

I haven't set up a server before. I tried whole day with set up SSH access, but the password I got just won't be able to login. I see people asked the similar question back in 2017 or 2018. The plan I got is a self-managed basic plan. So the support I got from digital ocean is very limited. 😅

Do you mean that you're not able to ssh into the digital Ocean droplet? Have you set up ssh authentication, and are you using the right username?

Yes, I used the following content on the digital ocean website and create two files, and added public key on the Edit SSH key pop-up window. And I got a Name and Fingerprint on the SSH Keys list. I use both to access the SSH, and also tried Name and the login password for digital ocean. Still cannot connect through SSH.

Create a new key pair, if needed
Open a terminal and run the following command:
ssh-keygen

Copy
You will be prompted to save and name the key.
Generating public/private rsa key pair. Enter file in which to save the key (/Users/USER/.ssh/id_rsa):

Next you will be asked to create and confirm a passphrase for the key (highly recommended):
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
Enter same passphrase again:

This will generate two files, by default called id_rsa and id_rsa.pub. Next, add this public key.

I now have

1 droplets(cpanel-whm)
1 database
1 domain

I think the next step will be connect through SSH then I can install flarum. It is right? 😅

ash3T can you show the command you run with which you try to ssh into your droplet?

what do you get when you try

ssh root@IP-of-VPS

It should ask for a password.

To be honest, for beginners, you could have relied on a password alone and created a new user with sudo privileges for now. You can do that easily by resetting your VPS.

As for setting up your forum, Digital Ocean allows you use install LAMP in a few clicks. Then it is a matter of a few commands to install Flarum.

You may feel like it's hard to manage a server but it's very simple.

Don't tell your IP to anyone (create own name servers or you can use Cloud Flare)
Change default ports
Keep everything up-to-date

That is all I think, Use a SSH key instead of password.

Install fail2ban at server level (this in my list I have to do for my server)

Thanks @Hari what do you do after set up your server. I installed apache then got stuck there, I cannot see the installation page, after installed flarum through composer. 😅
