Extension conflicts - Best Answer

I have gotten to the point where I’ve decided, with a heavy heart, to not use fof Best Answer. 😩🙂

I would like to use it again one day, and so I’m posting this in case anyone gets bored and wants to try and figure it out.

If you install and activate fof Best Answer, Hashtag, and Link Previews, then the link previews will not load. If you disable hashtags, the link previews work. Or, if you keep hashtags enabled but disable best answer, then link previews work.

It is not Hashtag alone conflicting. It only conflicts with Link Preview if you also have Best Answer. It is a combination of all three that cause a problem. You can install two of them just fine.

In other words:
✅Best Answer and Hashtags installed together: works great
✅Best Answer and Link Preview together:
works great
✅Hashtags and Link Preview together:
works great
❌All three: Link preview stops working

If anyone figures out how to fix this, let me know.

I suspect it comes down to the order in which certain scripts are loading.

I wonder if this is an extension idea? With an extension, change the order in which certain things load? Or, only allow a certain extension to load within a certain tag? Could be kewl.

They are called optional dependencies and that's something Flarum already can do. In order for an extension to set this up the maintainer first needs to understand the problem at hand. I cannot imagine something going wrong without an error, have you checked the log files too?

luceos There is one error in the log. It’s a symphony http type timeout error from the link preview extension. But, if I disable best answer there is no timeout error and link preview works. Or, if I disable hashtag, there is no timeout error.

This error may not help. It’s telling me what I already know which is: when BOTH hashtag and best answer is enabled, Link Previews don’t load. Only when both are enabled though. It’s not 100% one extension’s fault. It’s a combo.

Maybe it can handle one of these dom manipulating extensions. But when both are activated, there’s too many changes going on which hurts the link preview scraper in some way.
