It would be nice to have a feature about what users are doing in the user card. For example: User is reading topic xx / User is looking at member profile / User is in settings.

Would it be possible to develop such an extension? Can you do this?

I think this is a very niche feature if you individually want to track what people are doing. But I do know this exists in other community software products. By default this most likely should be disabled (not shared) with everybody so in reality how many are going to use this?

Having said that: Partly this is already possible with other extensions - and I do use this in some of my communities. For one you can have a widget displaying who is online and additionally to that you can have a overview who actually read certain discussions with Who Read. This covers the most important parts where you would want to know what people are doing within your community.

GreXXL I’ll share a quick story from my own experience. On text-based role-playing forums, there’s usually a list of online users at the bottom of the page. If you hover over a nickname, you can see which thread that person is currently viewing.

It’s not a particularly essential feature, but it helped participants notice when a moderator was in the same thread and would (likely) be posting soon. Which is why they wouldn’t go to sleep and kept waiting for that post 😅

Capybara if you add Realtime to what I posted above you would see that the moderator has already read the last post and is currently typing. So actually I think this is already possible today.

Umutcan yeah I'll consider this for Realtime on Flarum 2.x. Currently working through the upgrade of Payments for 2.x, will revisit realtime after that. Both extensions need a bit of love anyway.

Side question, this would be visible only on the user card? I have a feeling it might be valuable in other locations, maybe even the discussion posts itself. Not sure how that would look though. Suggestions welcome!

I think it would be more accurate to have it on the user card. Knowing which topic, member profile, or page the user is on would be a great improvement. Also, allowing users to choose in their profile settings whether other users or guest visitors can view their online details is very good for privacy. Several competing forums already do this. It would suit Flarum very well.

I'm not sure how it would work as a widget, but I'm confident that if you document the necessary endpoint APIs, @Sami (SychO) will work on it and integrate 👉👈 it into the forum.

If you'd like, I can prepare a few prototypes in Figma and add them to this topic in the coming days.

I think we'll simply re-use the existing per user "show whether you're online" privacy control. Then make the feature available based on a permission, admins would be able to always see that status.
