Getting Index Of / Tried looking into Docs But not Fixed

Hydiete4 it seems I am rusty with Apache, the directive is DirectoryIndex not Index.

But if you have no idea how to configure a vhost, you'd better use a control panel.

Sir, here is my apache2.conf file. I followed some youtube tuts to set up the server and all other sites are working fine. I just have problem with installing flarium

Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Require all denied

I updated the site.com.conf file with DirectoryIndex index.php

And still no change at all. The site is showing the IndexOf / page like before!

I updated my php version to 8.1

Now when I click on site.php a blank page appears.

Also, I noticed the 'Public' folder is not showing up in the index of the page

Sorry I am asking a lot of questions!

I managed to install it successfully but I had to go to site.com/public folder to access the forum.

I want it to access using site.com

How do I do it?

I haven't touched any files of flarum so far.

Hydiete4 setting DocumentRoot to /public is the recommended way to take care of the public folder. In your configuration above it looked good so I'm not sure why it isn't working. Unless you have two public folders in one another? One from your host and one from Flarum? If so just set the DocumentRoot to /path/to/site.com/public/public

If you are unable to edit DocumentRoot you can follow https://docs.flarum.org/install#customizing-paths

Yes,

The conf file looks like

DocumentRoot /var/www/site.com/public

But where in .htacess should I add the following line?
<Directory "/var/www/site.com/public">
AllowOverride All
</Directory>

If I put the following line in the site.com.conf file

<Directory "/var/www/site.com/public">
AllowOverride All
</Directory>

Then I can access the site using site.com/public

If I remove it from .conf file and add it in public/.htaccess file then the public folder disappears from the Index of page.

I just want to access my forum on site.com... please help me fix this I am going crazy as I have been trying different fixes since this morning to night

Hydiete4 are you able to share the full path to the index.php file of Flarum on your server filesystem so we know exactly how many levels of subfolders you have and whether you have a public_html folder provided by your host?

The Directory rule can go almost anywhere I think, except in .htaccess since it's the rule that enables the use of htaccess files. It's possible you already have a global rule that allows it on some hostings, in that case it's not needed. It shouldn't hurt to have it in more than one place.

Are you sure you are modifying the correct Apache configuration file? Is it normal it's on port 80 and not 443 for HTTPS? If you're going to enable HTTPS anyway it's probably a good idea to do it first so that you don't need to redo all the Apache configuration again for HTTPS later. If you install Flarum with HTTPS it also means you won't have to re-edit Flarum configuration later to change the URL.

The full path is /var/www/site.com/public/index.php

I am using a Digital Ocean droplet running on Ubuntu 18 so I configured the server myself and there is no public_html folder.

I have a let's encrypt https set up and the port is 443 when I access the site.

Have you updated the DocumentRoot of the 443 block with the same value?

I'm asking this because I see you shared the 80 block in a previous comment Hydiete4

If :80 is only used for redirecting to HTTPS, it you don't even need to customize it with Flarum config since Flarum would never be served from there.

Hydiete4 if you configured the server yourself, it's probably something you configured.

I think the convention is usually to create 2 virtualhost definitions per site, one for HTTP and one for HTTPS. I think they can be in either 2 files or a single file. But it could also be possible you have a single block handling the redirection of all HTTP sites to HTTPS, or possibly a single HTTPS block acting as some sort of reverse proxy to each individual HTTP site.

If you go through every site definition in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ you should find it eventually.

Yes, I found it. So I edited site.com-le-ssl.conf exactly like site.conf.

DocumentRoot /var/www/site.com/public

My site.com/public/.hataccess now like this:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]

<Directory "/var/www/site.com/public">
AllowOverride All
</Directory>

Now I am receiving 500 Internal Server Error

Hydiete4 don't put the AllowOverride All in .htaccess. It can only be added to Apache global or virtualhost configuration.

If there's still a 500 error after fixing that, check the Apache error logs and Flarum logs. You can usually tell if the error is from Apache or Flarum based on the look of the error page.

Removed the line from .htaccess

And I got this error:

so @clarkwinkelmann, it's fixed finally 😃 Thanks to you and @luceos.

What I did was added the override code in both 80 & 443 block.

Then went back to public folder and edited the config.php

THe URL was set to https://site.com/public

I changed it to https://site.com

And it magically worked.
