How to mention a specific post in another post

I have the Mentions extension installed. The description of the extension says "Mention and reply to specific posts and users."

When I hover over the @ symbol in the toolbar at the bottom of the editor a tooltip says "Mention a user, group or post". If I click on the @ symbol it adds the symbol into the post and eventually I discovered that I can add # + the discussion id which then embeds a link to the whole discussion, but what do I need to add to embed a link to a specific post within a discussion?

Ultimately I'm trying to find a way for a user to PM somebody else who posted in the discussion. With FoF Byobu extension installed I can start a private discussion by clicking on the poster's name in their post, but this launches a new private discussion with no information about the 'source post' included in it, so I would like to be able to add a mention to the source post so it's clear what led to the private discussion. Ideally it would be good to have the option to automatically add a mention to the source post in the title of the private discussion but failing that manually adding @+#+[ID] in the private discussion title would be OK. But it seems like mentions don't work in discussion titles, only in the body of a post.

Can anybody suggest a better way of achieving what I want to be able to do?

I like the idea of adding to Byobu an ability to "discuss X privately" where you reference that post. Brilliant!

As for the subject title. There's no ux to mention posts from another discussion, but here's what possible with mentions:

clicking reply creates a mention to the post you reply to
start typing with @ to mention a user, but the list then filters down to posts from that user inside the current discussion
selecting some text in a post of a discussion creates a quote and an inline mention to that post inside the same discussion
the text generated from the above methods can be copied (or cut) from the composer (editor) and pasted inside a new discussion (also a private one) to start your OP with a mention to a post outside of this discussion (thread); this is also how you can add replies to other discussions with references to posts outside of these discussions

Where can that mention be seen in the UI so that I could copy and paste it into a private discussion?

That was what I read should happen but I have never yet seen a selection list appear. Could it be because so far I have only created a few test discussions and only two users posting to those discussions?

Ah I just saw where the mention appears - in the title of the reply! That will be more intuitive for my target user community to cut and paste that link rather than getting them to look for the discussion number surfaced by the Cross references extension.
