Hello everyone,
For years, we’ve used both Discord and Flarum to engage with our community. While Discord allowed for quick interactions, we found that most of the conversations there were centered around support, which often became difficult to manage. Important questions would frequently get lost in the fast-paced nature of Discord, and its structure made it hard to provide thorough, lasting support.
At Flarum, our mission is to empower everyone to build vibrant communities with ease, and we believe that our own platform is better suited for achieving that goal. Flarum offers a more organized, intuitive space for discussions, where every voice can be heard clearly. As such, we’ve made the decision to limit our Discord to team interactions only and move all community discussions to Flarum. This shift will help us provide better support and a more cohesive experience for everyone.
Aside from the #announcements
channel, all other Discord public channels will be removed on Sunday October 20th around 9 PM CEST.
Below, we explain the reasons behind this decision in more detail.
Why close the Discord server?
- Discord creates a division with our official community, it creates less uniformity and more fragmentation.
- It was fairly easy for support requests to receive no answer as other messages would drown them. We've also noticed that longer support requests became hard to follow for the same reason and when a thread was made, other capable people able to provide support were excluded.
- We feel that we need to dogfeed our own software more; if we rely heavily on another software for functionality that could be part of Flarum we will never really try to improve or ship those features. Using our software for edge case scenario's also helps us understand better the different ways webmasters use Flarum.
- Our most prominent public channel was almost entirely not about Flarum anymore, alienating new users from our software and creating confusion about the people developing the software.
Where can I remain involved in this community?
First and foremost you are most welcome underChit Chat , our own cats, brew and life adventures category.
What tag do I need to use now?
- tagBlog can be followed to stay informed about releases and other Flarum news
- tagSupport can be used to ask any support questions
- tagMeta is for anything related to discuss, the foundation or the team
- tagi18n is for anything related to translations or languages
- tagExtensibility can be used for any questions you might have developing extensions
- tagInternals can be used for contributing to Flarum (core)
We will revisit our tag structure once we've settled in a bit more.
As a sidenote we'd like to acknowledge that to some the public Discord chit chat channel was a cornerstone in their daily lives, something to keep in touch with similarly minded people on topics unrelated to Flarum. We would love to see this group continue to stay connected. In case this group would like to create their own Discord space, promoting such a server on this discussion would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.
