sledov As for deleting notifications, that would be outside the scope of this extension. The extension would mark the post as read and whatever the notification system decides to do with that information is up to it. So if someone reads it by clicking the link in an email, simply reading it in an email, or opening it in the browser after clicking the notification itself, they will all have the same result. This would be extremely important if someone developed an alternative notification extension that replaced the core one, or maybe just modified the way it worked. You say, “trying to track who has seen what”. It’s important to note if you’re read a pinned discussion completely it acts as a regular discussion. That’s one value of marking reads. It also will jump to the section where you last left off in a discussion if you haven’t read the entire thing.
As an argument against “show me that last 5/10 notifications” that defeats the purpose of notifying. If 6 people replied to 6 different topics of yours within 24 hours and you had the limit set to 5. You could miss a reply to one of your topics. This is a very possible senario for admins or active people on a forum.
As for email providers, I agree. It’s a very easy thing to mess up doing yourself. Although, what you say about tracking isn’t entirely true. Some providers like MailChimp, meant for subscriber lists, do track emails. This is not the same thing as something like Mailgun, which simply sends emails. They might have tracking, but if they do, it’s anonomous. This wouldn’t allow notifications to be marked as read on a user to user basis.
