  • Community Update - September 2016

hitting the books

Hello my fellow flarumites,

September is back to school season for many of us, and it means new workloads, different schedules and a sadness for a summer gone by. Flarum isn't going anywhere, but it might take a little time to adjust to our new routines around here.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Beta 6 is right around the corner, one more step on our path to a stable release. There's only a couple blockers left, and some of our community members have pitched in to help with those bugs. We're all excited to see another release that will bring some much-needed configuration options to the admin panel such as SMTP configuration and a way to set a custom header, logo and favicon. It also brings some new permissions such as viewing IP addresses and holding new discussions for approval, plus a few other goodies you've seen around our site and the devflarum site.

STAFF UPDATES

I'm sad to announce that @Dominion will be stepping down from his position as Community Moderator for personal reasons. We wish him all the best in his future, and hope to see his face around Flarum again. So, this change, with @Toby on a new surgical unit (as many of you know he is a full-time medical student) this month and @luceos transitioning to a new job and a move, our staff is a little shorthanded this month. Rest assured, we're keeping up with the new topics, but we're always happy to see our community members step up to offer advice, solutions and tutorials of problems they've solved themselves.

SHOUT OUT

Our extension developers are superstars, and this summer they've been on fire. If you haven't already seen some of the new extensions for Flarum, here are some of the highlights I'd like to point out.

Transliterator by @NikolaiMorozov
For users of non-Latin languages, you may have noticed that Flarum coughs and drops these characters from the URL bar, leading to boring and unhelpful links like yoursite.com/d/382-/2. The transliterator by Avatar4eg resolves this issue for some languages by mapping these characters to a Latin equivalent.

OpenGraph Content Embedding by @marcozambi
Just like the leading social networks, this will attempt to grab images and a short description from links you post so you can judge whether it's worth clicking.

reCAPTCHA by @sijad
One of the more popular extension requests has been for a reCAPTCHA security barrier for sign-up of a Flarum account. This uses Google's reCAPTCHA, which has become a dead-simple click for most users. Now you can rest easy that spambots won't be taking over your forum.

Geotags by @NikolaiMorozov
Another embedding extension, this one embeds a Google maps widget into your posts when you add a location to your posts. This is extremely useful for meetups, geocaching (e.g. Pokemon Go) or just referencing a geographical location.

There are many others in our Extensions tag, and you can see the full curated list here.

WRAP UP

Thanks for tuning in again, Flarum. We'll be back next month with another update, but until that time look for more blog posts and follow us @Flarum on Twitter.

Printed on 100% Recycled Electrons

A short yet direct update. We're all waiting ever so patiently for the stable to come through but so long as there is active development taking place, I for one will remain patient.

Thanks for everything you've done @Dominion. It's always a shock to see someone leave the team. Best of luck in your new job @luceos and @Toby. Seems like September is a busy time for us all. At least we are approaching summer here in Australia very soon! ?

Amazing. You guys and gals rock.

This is a fantastic system you have made. Easy to install and use. Love IT

      Digital stickied the discussion .

We're using it in production. It's just too awesome.

Edit: No, actually, the right amount of awesome.

Can't wait for a stable release!!!! Also may i ask, will beta 6 be the stable version or is the version that's going to follow it going to be a stable one?

      Thanks

Much thanks is owed to everyone helping out with making Flarum better, of course! But I think that as a Free and open source project one should strive to use as much free and open source tools as possible, especially when they are very good alternatives. So I wonder why this extension is using Google Maps instead of OpenStreetMap? Not complaining, I can't code at all much less make a useful extension like this, but just wondering and hoping someone will make an OSM version ?

        Community Update - October 2016

        Flarum is now stable!

Haha, just kidding guys. Can't wait for this day! ?
