I think private messages extension will be great for any community!
My users want it so much.

I think direct messages ("PM" in old forums) have to be in other site and separate from the rest of the discussions. Even on similar platforms like discourse or nodebb, direct messages are apart. Besides, if they are apart there is additional space to put a menu with inbox, outbox and trash ?

I greatly respect and appreciate all the work @luceos has done on Byobu (and everything else). But we are finding private discussions don't work as a substitute for private messages.

My members buy and sell a lot of things on my forum, and there is a need to send a private message to negotiate details and shipping info privately. And those messages shouldn't be listed among discussion threads - they are 2 very different things.

Every other forum I know of has this as a core feature. It's just a simple conversation between 2 members. Is anyone considering building a plug-in? @clarkwinkelmann or @luceos perhaps?

You could assign the PD tag to be hidden from All Discussions, and thus make it accessible only from a direct link to the tag.

That might work with some tweaking. But I don't see how to link to the PD tag which I assume would give me a list of all my PDs? If I could do that, I could create a link called "Private Messages" and just show PDs.

Also, it's odd to have to pick another tag (category) when it's just a PD.

@JRay I personally like the approach @luceos and his team had with Byobu as it stands out from the normal "PM" concept. It wouldn't be too hard to bring the old classic approach to PM's in the form of another extension, but that is far from our road-map within my group (ReFlar).

Ralkage Thanks for the reply. Maybe some new options in Byobu could make it happen. But not quite right in it's current form.

Is anyone considering creating a private message extensions? I have tried PD but it isn't working. In my Forum people need to be able to reach other people privately and PD is not a intuitive way of doing it. PD is great as a group discussion but not as a way of chating. Maybe an extension where in a person profile there would be a contact form that would be sent to the person email. But still I think the PM would be the best in my case since it is easy (just go to profile and click a button to start chat)

bertaveira I can assure you that there will be a private messaging system of some sort, whether it be available in core or as an extension is yet to be seen but it is a common request. There may also be a slight hold on new extensions for the time-being at least until the next version is released as there are a lot of changes taking place.

PranavJadhav you can easily assign a custom page for Byobu to the private discussions using the sijad/links extension with this endpoint (modify with your forum address): https://discuss.flarum.org/?q=is%3Aprivate just type in your search bar is:private7
