luceos collins considering an enterprising and technically knowledgeable admin with database access could read any private discussion already (and this is generally true for any forum software, btw), I'm in favor of preserving privacy through the interface. Statistics should be fine, though.
If someone wants to make their discussion public, they can create a public discussion. Presumably private discussions are private because they're too sensitive for the general population.
