All these 500 may be related to the zend issue. Because even when the requests work, the warning appears and changes the status to 500 ?

so, insted of

simply

into the require-section of the (local) composer.json file?

You need to run the command in the appropriate folder. CD to ~/forums.

You could also add the zend line by hand (have a look at my example composer file to see where things should go into the file). The require command just adds things in the require section of the file.

yy, I took the 1 instead of the * in the end. While we are on topic. I took the content of the .htaccess-file from github and pasted it into a blank .htaccess-file in /forums. To make sure, is that legit or is there something I have to watch out for?

(Btw. if I'm adding AllowOverride All to .htaccess, everything goes down.)

After seeing your site I think you have a default apache rule that returns a basic error message on 500 errors instead of Flarum's. That's why we can't see the real error message (but it should still be in the logs). That's probably a global config made by your host... If you can't change it there is no way to see the error in the browser ?

I can't tell if that's an htaccess problem. Usually to test if the htaccess works I add some garbage text at the end of the file to break it. If I can still display my homepage after that, it means the htaccess it not read. If a 500 error appears, it means the htaccess works (but is obviously broken). Don't forger to revert the htaccess like it was before if you try that ?

The AllowOverride should not go into the htaccess, it goes in the server config to enable htaccess files. On shared hosting it's usually enabled by default. Use my trick above to check.

Couldn't this be a hint? Since I've replaced the whole vendor-folder, could it be that some 'legacy issues' are interfereing?

When I spam the htaccess-file (the one in the forums folder) I get the internal server error. It's being read.

Sooo, any ideas how I could i proceed? If there's another permission problem, how would I address it to the prover?

Some pointers:

there is no need to lower minimum-stability to downgrade the stratigility package. As @clarkwinkelmann pointed out, you can lower it indefinitely, but never do so without using prefer-stable: true as well!
If you read the error message composer is throwing more closely Could not find package 1.2.1 at any version for your minimum-stability, it's looking for a package called 1.2.1, this is caused by the incorrect format of the command by adding unnecessary spaces. Within your flarum directory run:
```
composer require zendframework/zend-stratigility:1.2.1
```
Please note the quotes and spaces I left out. This has to work without any issue.

If you want to execute a composer command in another directory than the current, use the -d argument to change the working directory, eg;

composer require zendframework/zend-stratigility:1.2.1 -d ~/forums

Assuming you installed Flarum in the subdirectory forums of the home directory.

I'm still trying to make it work. I now also took the free trial with Amazon AWS EC2. Went from amazon linux to ubuntu 16, to ubuntu 14.10. Flarum was installed to var/www. And there it sits, I cannot access it, can't relocated it. Permission issue.

I'm trying to configure this server, but zPanel also makes problems - can't install a file-manager for example. Or access phpMyAdmin, since I'm required a username + password, but just defined a password some way down the line. I tried zadmin, root, ubuntu. Once I stopped MySQL via terminal. Then I could log in, after restarting mysql I've been shut out again.

Assuming I've installed flarum to var/www (it was done so by default), how would I access it?

I would, however, prefer to get flarum running on my shared server. What can I do?
