Bazaar, the extension marketplace

Bazaar is the first extension released under the new Flagrow, something I've announced on our insiders mailing list. Flagrow has grown to a more professional project with both @jordanjay29 and @clarkwinkelmann joining me, aside from two others (an expert designer/frontend developer and a seasoned devops) who are not active in this community.

This extension would not have seen the light of day without the amazing work by Clark who not only made the proof of concept but did a lot of the initial work!

We're forming a cooperative together as we speak, called Gravure, which will provide at least one other Flarum-related service in the near future. I think it's even mentioned on our website ?

luceos Bazaar is the first extension released under the new Flagrow.

Almost a year that we've announced Bazaar. Over 3.5K installs and almost 100 Bazaars connected to a user on our portal flagrow.io unlocking the ability to favorite extensions and list active Bazaar-enabled Flarum installations.

These past few months we've been working tirelessly to bring Bazaar and our portal to a next level completely.

Background extension processing

One of the biggest problems with Bazaar right now are the timeouts while installing, uninstalling and doing other composer-related tasks. We've been able to push this to the background. Bazaar in the upcoming version will allow you to configure one cronjob using our console package. All Bazaar tasks will be handled in the background from them on, preventing any timeouts!

Premium extensions

We will be offering premium extensions! And not just ours, all extension developers can get in touch for an invitation once we're ready (join us on discord to stay in the loop).

Although there is a commercial goal behind this, we also firmly believe that extension developers getting paid for their hard work will stick around longer and as a result less extensions will be abandoned.

Subscriptions

The concept revolves around monthly subscriptions. Each premium extension is given a specific fee per month for the flagrow.io user to pay. With this subscription the user can install the extension on an unlimited number of Bazaar-enabled (and connected) Flarum installations (a manual method without Bazaar for installing premium extensions will be provided too).

Cancellation

It's up to you to decide how long they like to maintain the subscriptions. Cancelling the subscription removes the ability to install or upgrade that specific premium extension after that. Any previous installations will remain intact.

We've been hoping to bring you all this in 2017. Although we decided in favor of quality, our current outlook is for this or next month. On our todo no blocking issues are left! For perspectives' sake, while working on these premium extensions the Gravure team has pushed 117 commits with over 13k additions of code ?.

blackjelly could you please create an issue on github. This is a very new extension that might not work on all environments, especially on shared hosting. I'm willing to take a look though.

And please don't mention Jordan, he's not a developer for this extension.

amdad now that I am sitting down and have the time to answer your question without hurrying it.. Here it goes.

The Flagrow marketplace was initially created so that we can offer paid extensions eventually, for Gravure has a long-term commercial mindset. The result, Bazaar, does a bit more and solves a problem many of us faced. Our goals for Bazaar are quite ambitious and most likely will require us to maintain this extension even when Flarum itself offers marketplace functionality.

Whether the core team is interested in parts of our code has to be seen. Conceptualisation of a possible marketplace has taken place, but the definite form has not been decided on. Nevertheless the core team can expect full cooperation from us upon request and collaboration on that functionality if they wish.

Just one question, I am testing it but there are seem to be a few extensions not being available to install, BBCode Helper for example. Is it normal?

So far I have tried to Install the following extensions with no luck:

BBCode Helper
Chat
Birthdays
Flagrow Split
Widgets

I ran a composer update a few minutes ago and tried to install again, but still no luck.

This extension is a bit dangerous. Ive installed an extension using bazaar, after that, my forum went blank. I luckily found the culprit, but i think you should somehow check for dangerous extensions...

neoneosa this extension is hardly any more dangerous than installing extensions with composer manually. The benefit with doing it manually is that you have your terminal open already to run an uninstall in case something goes wrong. Bazaar on the other hand will become unavailable in that case. For that reason we need to increase our accuracy of extensions that are compatible and blacklist those that are not. Hence I'd love to hear more details about the extensions you've tried installing, so we can do something about it. I hope you would be able to report on our github issue tracker ?

AngelAvila if you are able post to our github issue tracker, it helps a lot so we can identify your environment and any potential causes of this behavior. Most likely it's related to restricted memory though.

luceos Thanks for reply. I understand. For example http://octobercms.com/plugins it's official marketplace where free and commercial plugins are together. One way it support project and another authors.
"One to rule them all" ? Maybe it will end up like this? Or you want Bazaar authors community to stay independent?

Tagged 0.1.0-beta.3 which removes the timeout for the install and uninstall ajax requests. This might solve issues you might have. These were changes I forgot to commit at home ?
