I think if you compare liberties profile to mine, you will see how that white border does no justice. Your right though, it's opinionated, but I believe the culprit is whatever logic is behind assigning the avatar background color.
If the colors in the avatar I chose determine the avatars background color, then at the least make that 4px border also use the background color.
Especially since the user cannot specify profile background. (Ext hint hint)
I think it should be transparent or the avatars background color code.
